Description & Features+

Gilles Vigneault has had an extremely long career in Québecois music, and has remained a leader in the forms throughout it. Released in 2010, Retrouvailles is an album of duets (reunions in this case, as the title says), something of a standard for aging artists. Vigneault keeps the sound refreshing throughout, however, eschewing the gentrification that often comes with such duet sets. The album opens on a complex, speeded, and almost tiring round of rhythmic scatting between Vigneault and Catherine Major. In some instances (as with Lynda Lemay), the partner steals some of the focus from Vigneault, but he often returns to the forefront very quickly. The highlights here come with the unexpected formats -- a thumping call-and-response with Les Charbonniers des Lenfer, or the album-finishing "Les Gens de Mon Pays," a duet with everyone else included on the album and his unofficial anthem of the Québecois nationalist movement. Vigneault has a lot of power in his arrangements as well as his vocals, and Retrouvailles, while theoretically showing off his companions in music, also shows off the staying power he still holds, working along with different stylistic ideas and ending triumphantly in his own self-defined territory. ~ Adam Greenberg, Rovi
