Ratings & Reviews+

Magic The Gathering Arena of the Planeswalkers Game English Version is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 40.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun game, and expansions on the way! This is a hybrid game to bring in fans and supporters of the card game and fans of miniatures and battle games (similar to Heroscape). Simple to learn and the strategic elements make it play quite well. Games are quick to setup and playtime is very reasonable, you can play many quick skirmishes without it taking hours to complete. For those comparing it to the 15+ year old card game it is not a fair comparison. This is based on the older Heroscape system and integrates MTG's card based battling to a lighter extent. As the expansions come out I fully expect to be able to build battle decks and armies. AotPW is a fun light tactical game, with decent quality minis for the price. This is a great game for fans of the series and for those interested in the world of MTG. The first expansion with 2 additional Planeswalkers just released and hopefully even more are on the way! Also if you google or ebay search "Heroscape Terrain" you can find large lots of terrain pieces that will work and let you build your own custom battlefield!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must have for Dungeons and Dragons and MTG fans! I purchased this game for my husband's birthday and he absolutely loves it! We played it for the first time and it is a very well done mix of D&D and MTG. Strategy is very important, but the luck of the roll has a huge impact too. He really loves that they have come out with expansions for the game as well. The instructions are very clear, but it takes some time to get used to all the rules and the flow of game play. The board is huge and the figures are well done. I'm super happy with my purchase.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cool Yet Complicated We are such big Magic the Gathering fans so to know they had a board game version we were intrigued. It is for ages 10and up so myself, my husband and our two older sons (11 &14) played. This is a game that takes a lot of focus at first to understand what's going on cause its so Not like the card game. But I believe the only real way to enjoy this game is to know the cards. It was fun to play but we were split about recommending to others I definitely would but my 14 year old wasn't into it. Everyone first time playing will defiantly need to read the instructions first, which is time consuming especially since most board games one person just explains rules to all other players but to really understand how to play your hand you have to read for yourself. It seem as if there should be an expansion packet that is you can build your team but nothing is available I believe yet. So familiar cards are in the deck and some new ones are cool. I like it and we will probably play again if we can get our hands on the expansion packet, if it exists but for now I wouldn't purchase this game for anyone if I didn't know already that they were a die hard Magic fan. Its cool but definitely complicated. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Magic Board game This Magic board game is for players 10 years and older, however it may be a little complicated for anybody under the age of 10. The directions are long and detailed, and a game for 3 people takes about 36 turns. Approximately 1 hour. (you can decide if that is long or not). The 17 year old had no fun trying to explain it to the younger kids ( Ages 12 and 8). You could tell the kids were struggling to comprehend the rules. After all of the confusion, they just started playing the game and decided it may be best to learn as they go. They found out it was just easier that way. Also something to note for this game, you cannot use your own Magic Cards, as this game is very different than the traditional card game. Expansions are available for the die hard fans of the board game. Giving you bigger board spaces, more cards, and more figures (creatures). Besides the initial confusion, the game overall is fun, if you can get over the fact that it is absolutely not like the traditional card game, which should not be a draw back if you have any interest in Magic the Gathering merchandise. My personal recommendation would be, give it a try and you might just be surprised how much you really enjoy it. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
