Description & Features+

Here today, gone to tomorrow. When George (Rod Taylor) sits at the controls of his new creation, he has all the time in the world. He's invented a Time Machine that whisks him from 1899 to war-ravaged moments of the 20th century and into 802701. In that far-off era, passive Eloi face a grim future as prey to the glowing-eyed subterranean Morlocks... unless the time-traveling stranger from the past intervenes. At the controls of the 1960 movie of H.G. Wells' classic "The Time Machine" is effects trailblazer George Pal, whose features and short films won a combined seven Oscars(R) and Special Awards. One winner was this beloved adventure loaded with visual marvels, from the nuclear destruction of London (complete with lava eruption) to the colorful whirligig of time travel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb upgrade to this classic film I saw 'The Time Machine' when I was a kid when it was first released in 1960. Although I was aware of the not so subtle anti-war message, it has a greater impact on my now since I lived through The Cold War, Vietnam, Iraq #twice# and Afghanistan. At any rate, it still is one of my top ten favorite sci-fi films of all time. The effects are still pretty good considering the time it was made, having won an Oscar for visual effects. The story still holds up and the acting is quite good although Yvette Mimieux is pretty bland but still gorgeous nonetheless. The real improvement is the visual quality of the Blu-ray version. The original DVD release was, to be blunt, pretty terrible. The colors were washed out and many of the shots were very grainy particularly those of the sphinx and other matte scenes. This version is nice & crisp, the Metrocolor lives up to its name and I'm seeing stuff I never noticed before. The sound track has NOT been enhanced from what I could tell but it still very good with its rousing score. So, if you currently own the DVD version, give to your local library and pick up this disk. You won't be disappointed. I should also mention that the Blu-ray also has the film's trailer along with a nice 47 minute documentary about George Pal followed by a nice mini-sequel where Rod Taylor, Allen Young & Whit Bissel are reunited to 'finish' the story. This 1993 feature was also on the DVD version.
