Ratings & Reviews+

TomTom - Go 500 5" Navigation System (US, Canada, Mexico) is rated 2.5 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it I've owned TomTom's for years. At first I was hesitant about the traffic needing your data from the phone, but found it uses so little that it's a moot point. The logic is great, it finds routes quickly, re-routes nicely when traffic jams are on your route, and you can ask for alternate routes and it shows you the options they was Google maps does online. You can give it voice commands without touching it, just say Hello TomTom and it talks to you. They just made a couple of nice upgrades with the fall maps. Now you can pick an alternate route by simple turning the car that way. It will also try to predict where you want to go without any input. I like the unit and recommend it if you are a TomTom fan. The traffic is accurate and it tells you how far away it is and once you're in it how much further you need to drive to get out of it. Just me two cents.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from not as good as other tomtom , simplicity is gone Sometimes brands make changes because they think they need to do them, but it happens to be that the changes that they make are not as good as we expect it to be. Comparing this device with the 2435 they killed this gps ( go 500 ). For me TomTom has been characterized by its simplicity to find and do stuff, and that is not what they did with this device. This are some examples: 1- You don't see the zoom route between your location and the destination as you get closer with a simple touch. 2- 50% of the times it tells me the wrong side of my destination and also if you don't hear what side, you miss it because there is no way to hear it again. 3- it doesn't ask you if you want tolls or not, it only shows you a blue line on top for a few seconds, if you don't see it and you don't want tolls, you are going to pay it. 4- if you are speeding, it gives you the same sound as the red light camera warning, it doesn't let you change the sound differentiate them. 5- when you get to the destination it automatically goes to a 2D zoomed out map, in my opinion it doesn't make any sense. 6- the traffic feature I don't think it works as accurate as they, and us, would like it to work, besides that when you download the app it shows you the icon app on your phone the whole time, even when the phone is not connected to the device ( I'm sorry TomTom but we don't use our phones just for your app) if the phone is not connected it shouldn't be at the notification bar the whole time. if I turn the app off it will not reconnect to the phone again. Also if your phone don't have voice and data at the same time forget about traffic on your device then if you are talking. this are only a few examples of the things they change for bad (in my opinion)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst GPS Unit You Can Buy I have used a Garmin for years and then this TomTom Go 500 for a couple weeks before returning it. 1. The voice that gives turn by turn directions is hard to understand. They have clearer voices but those ones don't speak street names, which defeats the whole purpose. 2. Navigating through the menus is very cumbersome, especially while driving. With the Garmin, you get to where you want in the menus with fewer clicks. 3. The TomTom doesn't seem to allow you to get an overview of your route. With the Garmin, you click on the top of the screen and it'll give you all of your turns from where you're at to your destination. 4. The voice control feature of TomTom does not work. Every time I tell it to do something, it says it can't understand. Sometimes the voice control feature turns on when I didn't even say the magic phrase "Hello TomTom." 5. The TomTom constantly loses bluetooth connection with your wireless phone, which isn't a huge deal. The only good thing I can say about this TomTom is that mechanically it seems to work, whereas the Garmin's are made very poorly mechanically.
