BB Creams 101

New to the BB cream scene? You’re not alone. BB creams have been popular in parts of Asia for decades, but only burst onto the beauty scene in North America around 2011. Since then, they’ve become a makeup bag must-have. So what’s the big deal? BB Cream (meaning “Blemish Balm” or “Beauty Balm”) is a beauty hybrid that tackles some of the biggest skin care woes. Most major beauty brands have a BB cream, and though they’re all a bit different, they all offer the same basics: moisture and natural-looking coverage. Sound too good to be true? Read on to learn more about the benefits of BB creams.

If you need a bit of coverage but don’t like the heaviness of a foundation, a BB cream is the way to go. BB creams offer more coverage than a tinted moisturizer, but less coverage than a foundation. The result: it conceals minor imperfections to create a skin tone that looks naturally even without looking overdone.

Many BB creams are also formulated with a primer. Makeup primer is applied after your moisturizer and before your foundation to smooth the skin’s surface, and also to help keep your makeup in place. In a BB cream, the primer is included alongside your moisturizer and coverage for an easy one-step application. If you’d like more coverage, you can simply apply your foundation on top, and continue with the rest of your beauty routine.

BB creams are all formulated with moisturizing properties, from light moisture for normal skin, to rich moisture for dry skin. Moisture is important for every skin type — dry, oily, and everything in between — so when shopping for your perfect cream, narrow down your choices first by the level of moisture you need, then consider all other factors. This is important, especially if you intend for your BB cream to replace your moisturizer.

Sun Protection

A healthy glow is beautiful year-round, but it’s important that your glow comes from good skin care and a healthy diet — not from the sun’s harsh rays. Many BB creams come with at least SPF 15 to help shield your skin from the sun. However, even if your BB cream does have sun protection, it might not be strong enough to fully protect you in strong sun. It’s important to read labels carefully to make sure that your BB cream does have SPF, and that it’s strong enough for your needs.

Anti-Aging Cream

Love your anti-aging cream? You might be able to get the same results from your BB cream. Along with the basics, like moisture and coverage, many BB creams are also formulated with anti-aging components. These can help soften the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Skin Tone Correction

Though your foundation does a great job covering imperfections in your skin, many BB creams go one step further. Sure, BB creams cover minor imperfections as well, but there are many creams on the market that are formulated with skin tone correctors to help even out dark spots and discolouration over time. Eventually, you might not need to cover up as much as before — or at all.

Though BB creams are considered to be a “jack-of-all-trades”, they might not replace all the products in your makeup bag. Sometimes they work best alongside other products you use regularly.
• Even if your BB cream contains SPF, it might not be enough to protect you. If you burn easily, reapply sunscreen throughout the day as needed
• If you have very dry skin, your BB cream might not be enough to quench your skin. Apply a moisturizer before applying your BB cream
• Use a concealer to touch up any hard-to-cover blemishes or dark under-eye circles
• For more coverage, apply a BB cream under your foundation
• Keep your canvas clean: always remove your makeup at the end of every day
