Planning a Valentine’s Day Dinner

Planning your own romantic dinner for two can be much more romantic and meaningful than a restaurant reservation. This article gives tips on planning a Valentine’s Day dinner.

Planning a Romantic Dinner 101

It’s the perennial Valentine’s Day problem: you want a romantic date with your significant other, but restaurants are booking up fast and menus can be a bit pricey. If you’d like to give your Valentine’s date a special night, planning your own romantic dinner for two is a simple but thoughtful gesture that shows you care. From picking the perfect location to picking the perfect dessert, you can add your own personal touches to this date night to make it a truly memorable evening. With a bit of thought and careful planning, you’ll be on your way to an unforgettable Valentine’s date.

How to Plan Your Date

Choose a location
Before you begin planning the small details of the evening, you need to make one big decision: where are you going to eat? The location you choose will set the tone for the entire evening, so it’s important to pick a place that your date will appreciate. Of course, a romantic dinner at home is always an option, but if you’d like to think outside of the dining room, consider somewhere that has meaning to your significant other, like the place where you met, or maybe where you had your first date. Once you’ve set your location, it’s time to set a menu.
Set a menu
Your menu will depend on two things: where you’re having dinner, and, of course, your date’s favourite foods. If you choose a location outside of your home, your meal will need to be easy to pack and carry. Once you’ve figured out where you’ll be dining and how you can prepare the meal, it’s time to plan your menu. Keep in mind that a romantic dinner might not necessarily mean intricate hors d’oeuvres, the best cuts of meat, or an impressive cheese platter. Instead, it could be something simple that they truly love. After all, even grilled cheese can be perfect in the right circumstances. Of course, be wary of any food sensitivities or allergies before settling on a final menu.
Dress the part
This is a small detail, but how you present yourself will be part of the tone for the evening. If you want to create a truly romantic atmosphere, consider something semi-formal, like a nice dress or a button-up shirt with a tie. If you’re taking your dinner outside of your home, then be sure to dress appropriately. For example, if you’ll be setting up a picnic under the stars, you’ll want to dress warmly, and bring lots of extra blankets and some mitts, hats, and scarves. The more comfortable you are, the easier it is to enjoy your evening. And don’t forget to tell your date how to dress!
Light up the night
Lighting is an important detail, because it will work hand-in-hand with the location you choose to make a truly unforgettable experience. If you can, candles are a must. Add a touch of style by making an arrangement of different types and sizes of candles, like column, pillar and tea lights, and make sure you have the proper holders for each. If you can’t have candles for your dinner, don’t worry! Flameless candles will also work well to add ambiance.
Just as important as lighting, music can work with location and lighting to complete the tone you’re trying to create. For a classic romantic vibe, try jazz, piano arrangements, or acoustic guitar. To add a personal touch, create a playlist of their favourite songs, or songs that have meaning to the both of you. It might be a small detail, but the right music can speak volumes. And don’t forget — make sure you have a portable CD player or Bluetooth speaker for your MP3 player or smartphone to play your music.
Don’t forget dessert!
Dessert is the cherry on top of any meal, and a sweet treat is essential on Valentine’s Day. Chocolate is the Valentine’s Day staple, but it’s not everyone’s favourite dessert. This dinner is about spoiling your date and indulging them with some of their favourite things. So, for dessert, treat them to what they love, whether that’s cake, cookies, pie… or even chips. Being genuine and thoughtful is the most romantic thing you can do.
