In 1975, Reuniting with longtime producer Bob Ezrin (who was absent for Cooper's prior record, MUSCLE OF LOVE), Cooper released an album whose title explains the subject matter--WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE. Now on his own and in total control, Cooper was able to explore rock theatrics in a way that was impossible in his band. The ensuing tour was one of the most over-the-top excursions of that era. "Cold Ethyl" is a disturbing little ditty about necrophilia. The soft, melodic "Only Women Bleed" became a surprise smash for Alice, and there's a low-key feel as well on the chilling "Steven." The somewhat funky title track works as a kind of theme song, while Cooper's expected heavy metal tendencies are explored on "The Black Widow." Most of Lou Reed's band joined Cooper for this record. Guitarists Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner, as well as bassist Prakash John do a superb job of replicating the excitement of the original band.

Paramore Brand New Eyes [Bonus Track] CD. With 2007's RIOT!, Paramore proved that pop hooks and a killer set of pipes can still vault a band to platinum status, economic downturn be damned. Success comes with a price, though, and Paramore struggled as media outlets reserved most of their coverage for Hayley Williams, deemed by many to be the group's leader. Released in late 2009, BRAND NEW EYES presents Paramore as a stronger, leaner, and altogether more consistent band. "Careful" and "Ignorance" are two of the group's most aggressive tunes to date, and the rest of the disc follows suit, with the guitar interplay of Josh Farro and Taylor York (who makes his studio debut here, having joined the lineup after RIOT! was recorded) receiving much of the spotlight. NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the coda of seasonal covers, including the first sober version of "Nutrocker" ever cut, doesn't do much to break that spell. But for those already enchanted by the Orchestra, this will continue to enthrall.

For this reissue in the Atlantic Jazzlore series, Farmer and Hall are joined by bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Walter Perkins. Their repertoire is a bit surprising since four of the five songs were veteran swing standards; all but Miles Davis's obscure "Swing Spring." Hall (who has "I'm Gettin' Sentimental over You" as his feature) was a perfect musical partner for Farmer since both musicians have mellow sounds and thoughtful improvising styles that are more complex than expected. This 1987 reissue is well worth picking up. The band takes it back to basics on their much-speculated follow up to 2001's hugely successful SATELLITE. Enter Jason Truby (formerly of Christian rockers Living Sacrifice) who made the mutually fortunate transition from friend to new guitarist. Truby expands the musical palette of P.O.D.'s sound without compromising their intrinsic chemistry. His precise yet conservatively diverse guitar work breathes new life and inspiration into the band's songs, and he's lean on solos and heavy on catchy riffs.</li><li>Sonny Sandoval has grown even more as a singer, all but abandoning his rap vocal stylings. Performer Notes: <ul><li>Vangelis entered the '90s with this fairly low-key album of electronic interludes and sparkling, poetic vignettes in honor of a city. He uses an enormous array of digital and high-tech sounds to describe his metropolis, suggesting that such a city yet resides only in the future.</li><li>"Dawn" is a simply lovely paean to the opening light of the day. Light strings and melancholic trumpets rise over a skyline painted ambient shades of orange and ecru. "Side Streets" begins with humming sequencers and sad violin stabs as car motors awaken. Voices litter the sidewalk, as flutes pipe in the oncoming day. A tribute to the musical legacy of the great city, NEW ORLEANS SUITE consists of five movements, each concentrating on a different facet in the personality of early jazz: the blues, the ragtime of street marching bands, and church music, for example.</li><li>Ellington's formal musical elements are astonishing as always, combining the high-mindedness of classical composition and arrangement with the swing and immediacy of the jazz idiom. Interspersed between the suite's movements are "portraits" of influential players such as Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet. Superior ensemble playing heightens enjoyment of the album, and the solos are memorable, such as Paul Gonsalves' playing on "Portrait of Sidney Bechet" and the solo by Johnny Hodges (one of his last before his death) on "Blues for New Orleans." In this, the third installment of his Essence series, Jamal adds a different twist -- a fine jazz steel drum player named Othello Molineaux -- and he mixes a few transfigured standards ("The End of a Love Affair" is completely re-routed through his nervous system) with pieces of his own. The first version (for quartet) of "If I Find You Again" is a magnificent example of the tension Jamal can generate. "And We Were Lovers" and "Chaperon" are huge, borderline bombastic piano solos that ought to erase any doubts that Jamal continues to command one monster keyboard technique. As in the previous Essence entries, a guest horn player shows up briefly, tenorman Stanley Turrentine in epigrammic form on "Devil's in My Den," and the ultra-responsive rhythm section remains Idris Muhammad (drums) and James Cammack (bass). ~ Richard S.
