In 1975, Reuniting with longtime producer Bob Ezrin (who was absent for Cooper's prior record, MUSCLE OF LOVE), Cooper released an album whose title explains the subject matter--WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE. Now on his own and in total control, Cooper was able to explore rock theatrics in a way that was impossible in his band. The ensuing tour was one of the most over-the-top excursions of that era. "Cold Ethyl" is a disturbing little ditty about necrophilia. The soft, melodic "Only Women Bleed" became a surprise smash for Alice, and there's a low-key feel as well on the chilling "Steven." The somewhat funky title track works as a kind of theme song, while Cooper's expected heavy metal tendencies are explored on "The Black Widow." Most of Lou Reed's band joined Cooper for this record. Guitarists Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner, as well as bassist Prakash John do a superb job of replicating the excitement of the original band.

NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the coda of seasonal covers, including the first sober version of "Nutrocker" ever cut, doesn't do much to break that spell. But for those already enchanted by the Orchestra, this will continue to enthrall.

Their repertoire is a bit surprising since four of the five songs were veteran swing standards; all but Miles Davis's obscure "Swing Spring." Hall (who has "I'm Gettin' Sentimental over You" as his feature) was a perfect musical partner for Farmer since both musicians have mellow sounds and thoughtful improvising styles that are more complex than expected. This 1987 reissue is well worth picking up. Performer Notes: <ul><li>Vangelis entered the '90s with this fairly low-key album of electronic interludes and sparkling, poetic vignettes in honor of a city. He uses an enormous array of digital and high-tech sounds to describe his metropolis, suggesting that such a city yet resides only in the future.</li><li>"Dawn" is a simply lovely paean to the opening light of the day. Light strings and melancholic trumpets rise over a skyline painted ambient shades of orange and ecru. "Side Streets" begins with humming sequencers and sad violin stabs as car motors awaken. Voices litter the sidewalk, as flutes pipe in the oncoming day. "Nerve Center" finally introduces engaging rhythms and lurching guitars into Vangelis' mix, portraying a teeming environment of bodies-stressed laborers huddled over their desktops, banging on surfaces with copper tubes. A tribute to the musical legacy of the great city, NEW ORLEANS SUITE consists of five movements, each concentrating on a different facet in the personality of early jazz: the blues, the ragtime of street marching bands, and church music, for example.</li><li>Ellington's formal musical elements are astonishing as always, combining the high-mindedness of classical composition and arrangement with the swing and immediacy of the jazz idiom. Interspersed between the suite's movements are "portraits" of influential players such as Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet. Superior ensemble playing heightens enjoyment of the album, and the solos are memorable, such as Paul Gonsalves' playing on "Portrait of Sidney Bechet" and the solo by Johnny Hodges (one of his last before his death) on "Blues for New Orleans."
