Alessandro Rolla: Duets for violin & viola

Carlo Ipata ist unermüdlich auf der Suche nach lohnenden Werken, die zu Unrecht in Vergessenheit geraten sind. Hier stellt er uns Il Bajazet von Francesco Gasparini (1661-1727) vor, der das gleiche Schicksal wie das vieler anderer venezianischer Komponisten erlitt, die am Ende des 17. und zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts wirkten: Ihre Musik wurde zunächst von den Werken Vivaldis und dann von denen der neapolitanischen Schule um Leonardo Vinci und Nicola Porpora vollständig verdrängt. Trotz seines Wirkens in Venedig weist sein 1719 uraufgeführtes Dramma in musica (für das Gasparini seinen 1711 in Venedig erstmals realisierten Il Tamerlano überarbeitet hat) deutliche Einflüsse der römischen arkadischen Schule auf. Die Aufnahme entstand im Zusammenhang mit Aufführungen des Werks beim letztjährigen Opernfestival im toskanischen Barga. Obwohl abseits der großen Bühnen in Reggio Emilia uraufgeführt, konnte Gasparini 1719 auf eine illustre Besetzung zurückgreifen: Stars wie Francesco Borosini, Antonio Bernacchi, Marianna Bulgarelli und Faustina Bordoni wirkten bei Uraufführung mit. Die Stars der Produktion von heute sind Leonardo De Lisi (Bajazet), Filippo Mineccia (Tamerlano), Giuseppina Bridelli (Asteria) und Ewa Gubanska (Irene). Auch Händel spielt hier eine Rolle: Das Libretto seines 1724 in London uraufgeführten Tamerlano basiert auf denen der beiden Gasparini-Opern, und der Tenor Francesco Borosini übernahm auch hier eine Hauptrolle. Die Musikwissenschaftlerin Antonella D¿Ovidio taucht in ihrem Booklettext in die Geschichte von Gasparinis Bajazet ein und analysiert den Stil dieses meisterhaften, aber heute leider noch immer nicht genügend gewürdigten Opernkomponisten aufschlussreich.

Il Bajazet

Raphaëlla Smits, die belgische Grande Dame der Gitarre, spielt nun schon seit ungefähr 35 Jahren denkwürdige Aufnahmen ein, von denen viele bei Accent erschienen sind. Das vorliegende meisterhafte Recital mit Stücken von Antonio Jiménez Manjón erschien 1999 und ließ einem Komponisten Gerechtigkeit widerfahren, dessen Werke trotz der überragenden Qualität seiner Musik nicht häufig auf CD zu finden sind. Dieser spanische Komponist, der nach Südamerika emigrierte, schreibt fast unendlich abwechslungsreiche Melodien, die von Raphaëlla Smits zu neuem Leben erweckt werden und auf einem Originalinstrument von Vicente Torres aus dem Jahr 1899 erklingen.

Seit ihrer erfolgreichen Uraufführung 1830 im Teatro La Fenice in Venedig und erneut seit ihrer Wiederbelebung im Jahr 1935 in Catania gehört Bellinis Oper I Capuleti e i Montecchi zu den am häufigsten aufgeführten Bühnenwerken des Komponisten. Vielleicht mag manchem eingefleischten Belcanto-Liebhaber die Paarung Fabio Biondi und italienischer 'Schöngesang' des 19. Jahrhunderts zunächst etwas ungewöhnlich erscheinen. Es ist aber erklärtes Ziel des Dirigenten, den Zuhörern mit seiner Einspielung die Entdeckung bislang unbeachteter Details in diesem Meisterwerk zu ermöglichen und ihnen zu einer neuen Sicht darauf zu verhelfen. In seinem aufschlussreichen Booklettext legt Biondi dar, wie sorgfältig beispielsweise die originalen akustischen Gegebenheiten etwa hinsichtlich der Orchestergröße berücksichtigt wurden. Außerdem geht er auf die besondere Bedeutung von Bellinis Anmerkungen in der Partitur und auf die Wahl der korrekten Tempi ein. Die Rolle des Romeo wird hier von der grandiosen Vivica Genaux interpretiert, welche die Produktion zu einem wahren Fest wohlklingender Sangeskunst werden lässt. Nach zwei CDs ist man sich dann sicher: Biondi und italienischer Belcanto ist eine ganz und gar glückliche Kombination, die Bellinis Musik nicht völlig neu erfindet und gegen den Strich bürstet, jedoch mit so manch eingefahrener, aber eben auch unhistorischer Aufführungstradition aufräumt. Nichtsdestoweniger gelingt ihm hier ein Bellini, der gleichermaßen für Kenner und Liebhaber geeignet ist!

Vendado Es Amor No Es Ciego

Fabio Biondi präsentiert hier mit Europa Galante sowie einem handverlesenen Sängerensemble (u.a. mit der Mezzo-Sopranistin Ann Hallenberg) eine mitreißende Einspielung der späten Händel-Oper Imeneo. Zu hören ist das Werk in der Dubliner Fassung von 1742, wo es als Serenata mit dem Titel Hymen zur Aufführung kam. Für diese Fassung fügte der Komponist einige neue Arien hinzu und kürzte das Libretto behutsam. Fabio Biondi bringt hier erneut all seine Erfahrung und seinen Enthusiasmus für die barocke Musik ein. Als Ergebnis hören wir eine einnehmende und besonders gelungene Interpretation dieser zu Unrecht geschmähten und vernachlässigten Händel-Oper.

The birth of opera began around 1600 in Florence, where this new genre was used to accompany important political events. The court conductor Marco da Gagliano, who had also become acquainted with Monteverdi's new style during his time in Mantua, created a whole series of operas for the Medici house, but only two have survived. His opera "La Flora", to a libretto by the Florentine court poet Andrea Salvadori, was written for the wedding celebrations of Margerita de' Medici to the Duke of Parma Odoardo Farnese in 1628. The mythological material has many political references and tells of the love between the wind Zeffiro and the nymph Clori, who changes her name to "Flora" when she marries and gives birth to many kinds of flowers. Botticelli had already pictorially realised this myth 40 years earlier in his "Birth of Venus" and "La Primavera". For the present recording, more than a dozen solo singers, choristers and a large instrumental cast have come together to bring Gagliano's opera back to life almost 400 years after it's premiere!

Such was the significance of the music of Jean- Philippe Rameau for Frans Brüggen that the Dutch conductor's first concert with the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century featured a suite by the French composer, and his final directing appearance, shortly before his death in 2014, did likewise. Between times this inspirational musician and his orchestra recorded a series of orchestral suites drawn from the opéras-ballets, tragédies en musique and pastorales-héroïques, first for Philips and then for the orchestra's own imprint on Glossa. These eight suites have now been united by Glossa for the first time in a magisterial and richly-enjoyable demonstration of Frans Brüggen's empathy with the output of the Baroque composer from Dijon. From Les Boréades to Les Indes galantes, from Acante et Céphise to Zoroastre via Castor et Pollux, these suites - originating in scrupulous scholarship by orchestra member Wim ten Have - together represent a pillar in the modern revival and appreciation of the music of Rameau, which was dear to the heart of Brüggen and so many of the other early music pioneers of his generation.

Ein Deutsches Requiem

Gyorgy Vashegyi's new recording of Rameau's Dardanus superbly demonstrates the Dijon-born composer's genius, but also the mastery which Vashegyi - with his Orfeo Orchestra and Purcell Choir - has acquired in the music of the Late French Baroque. In conjunction with the preparation of a fresh edition for the Rameau Opera Omnia of the May 1744 version of Dardanus (under the aegis of the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles), Vashegyi conducts from a score prepared by the composer (and his librettist Leclerc de La Bruere) following the work's rejection by Paris Opera audiences in 1739, with the intention of reinforcing the tragedie's dramatic action. Enacting this new sense of intensity on this Glossa release are Cyrille Dubois in the title role of the warrior besotted with Iphise (Judith Van Wanroij), traumatized by her "guilty love" for the enemy of her dour father, Teucer (Thomas Dolie), who allocates the princess' marriage hand to a princely ally, Antenor (Tassis Christoyannis). With aid and abetment from Venus (Chantal Santon Jeffrey) and a Magician (Dolie again), Love conquers all. The dazzling array of solo singing featured here is accompanied, by turns, by joyful and mournful, festive and demonic choral interjections, the all couched in an exuberant, florid and decorative orchestral score (which includes the famous Chaconne).

The conductor György Vashegyi and his ensembles, the Orfeo Orchestra and the Purcell Choir, are fluent in various fields of baroque and classical music, with a particular predilection for French baroque opera. But one of their favourite lines of work is Lutheran sacred music, and a good example of this is this beautiful work, Wer ist der, so von Edom kömmt ("Who is this that comes from Edom?"), a period pasticcio with pieces by various composers. Graun (a composer at the court of Frederick II who was greatly admired by his contemporary colleagues), rubs shoulders here with Telemann and Johann Sebastian Bach, as well as with a mysterious unknown, who wrote several of the most impressive passages in the work. In fact, this is a Passion Oratorio, a reflection on the events related to the martyrdom of Christ based on freely chosen texts without following a precise Gospel and without summoning the usual characters of the drama into an imaginary setting. The originality of this patchwork also lies in the distribution of the text where - contrary to many passions of the time - the events of the last days of Jesus' life are told by chorales that float in the meditative atmosphere of the recitatives, arias and choruses. These chorales are especially impressive in the second part: the density of the writing, the unique dramatic harmonies, the arrangement of the voices are of such an exceptional quality that their author could definitely be Johann Sebastian Bach himself... whom the author of the essay included in the libretto, Gergely Fazekas, also points to as the possible compiler of this masterpiece.
