The trio's drummer was Kevin Norton who, like Lindberg, has worked extensively with both Anthony Braxton and James Emery. The third member of Tripolar is saxophonist Don Davis of the Doctor Nerve band, a seasoned improviser whose early appearances on record included milestone collaborations with Michael Mantler and Carla Bley; Karl Berger, Phillip Johnston, and the Microscopic Septet. On the longest track, "One for Ayler," the spirit of a beloved free jazz archetype is beautifully invoked. Tripolar conjures all of the essential elements that comprised Albert Ayler's musical persona. The essence of Ayler grew directly from gospel and R&B traditions; other ingredients were joyous airs that have been likened to Elizabethan nursery rhymes and echoes of military band music the young African-American saxophonist absorbed while in the armed forces overseas (one of these was the "Marseillaise" which Ayler playfully rechristened "La Mayonnaise"). Naturally enough for a native of southeast Michigan, Lindberg's "MC5" was named for Detroit's own original masters of plugged-in psychedelic rowdiness. This full-throttle release of raw energies feels very much like an encounter with one of Peter Brtzmann's units. The bracing "Send Off," on the other hand, is a swirling multiphonic workout for unaccompanied bassist. Live at Roulette NYC is an exceptionally fine example of where Lindberg has gotten to after decades of hard work and dedication to the art of creative improvisation. Includes liner notes by Felix Klopetek.</li><li>Aoyama Crows is the fifth album by Peter Brtzmann's Die Like a Dog Quartet. Saying the music can still surprise would be a lie. But that doesn't mean it lacks excitement, on the contrary. The performance, recorded at the Berlin Total Music Meeting in November 1999, contains all the elements necessary for an enticing free improv session. The rhythm section formed by Hamid Drake and William Parker is tried, tested, and true. The drummer can oscillate in and out of a pulse with incredible ease. Here he often turns on a groove, taking a Miles Davis-esque fusion direction when trumpeter Toshinori Kondo plays one of his spacy solos. The bassist's thunderous floorings are legendary, but what stands out in this recording is his arco work in the third of these four untitled pieces. For ten minutes he steals the show. Lately, Kondo has been churning out more accessible music, not because he makes compromises with the mainstream but simply because he infuses his playing with a funkier attitude. It leads to rewarding moments in the first track and a memorable section in track three, during which Drake and Parker lock into a groove to back his solo. His electronics also widen the group's sound palette. As for Brtzmann, he plays up to the standards he has established over the years, lacking maybe a bit of the overenthusiastic energy he is known for -- but that only leaves more room for the trumpeter. What Happened

Peter Brötzmann; Mats Gustafsson; and Ken Vandermark are three of the leading voices in contemporary improvised music. Together they have formed Sonore; a reed trio organized to investigate the melodic; rhythmic; and textural possibilities of freely improvised music.

Only the Devil Has No Dreams

In May 2011 these three musicians played in the film theater in Peitz, where the Jazz workshop was launched in the early 1970s. After a break of almost three decades, free Jazz was back here. This CD appears in the year of Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky's ninetieth birthday.

Peter Ehwald - It is our homage to the sound of the quintet in Jazz. Ultimately, it was about not focusing too much on pitch/rhythm/harmonies etc., but on our idea of what the sound of the Jazz quintet means to us. We wanted to translate a kind of nostalgia/meaning from an earlier time into our sound language and into the present. By sharing their potent ideas, Ehwald and Schultze have produced something greater than the sum of it's parts.
