FAQs - Minor Ailments
How can my pharmacist help me with minor ailments?
Pharmacists are trained healthcare professionals who conduct an assessment and may recommend non-prescription therapies, over-the-counter medication(s), or prescribe medication. If the condition is serious, requires follow-up, or falls outside of the pharmacists’ scope of practice, they will refer you to your primary care provider for further assessment. This pharmacy service provides a convenient and accessible means to receive an assessment for an eligible minor health condition.
Do I require an appointment with a pharmacist to assess for a minor ailment?
At this time, participating Walmart Pharmacies are offering appointments for pharmacist assessments for specific minor ailments. Customers living in Saskatchewan, Ontario and Prince Edward Island can schedule an appointment online by clicking on their respective province above. Customers living in Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia can call their local Walmart Pharmacy to book an appointment. Appointments are subject to provincial eligibility. To confirm the minor ailments that your pharmacist can prescribe for, click on your respective province above. Walk-ins may be available subject to pharmacist availability.
Do I have to be a Walmart Pharmacy patient to request a pharmacist assessment for a minor ailment?
No. Individuals are not required to be a patient of Walmart Pharmacy in order to receive a pharmacist assessment for a minor ailment.
What can I expect during my visit for a minor ailment?
You will be required to complete a consent form prior to receiving an assessment for a minor ailment. Please bring your provincial health card (if applicable) to your appointment. The pharmacist will perform an assessment that involves asking a series of questions to determine a recommendation. Following the assessment, the pharmacist will determine what therapy, if any, is required (prescription or over-the-counter medication) or refer you to a primary care physician as required.
What happens after my assessment for a minor ailment?
During the assessment, our pharmacist will work with you to determine an appropriate timeline for follow-up based on the desired treatment outcome. Should you have questions or concerns before the scheduled follow up, you can call your pharmacist. Following the assessment, your pharmacist will notify your primary care provider of the outcome(if applicable).
Are there any costs associated with a Pharmacist Assessment for a Minor Ailment?
Currently, the provincial government is providing pharmacist assessments for minor ailments at no cost to the patient in Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Prince Edward Island. A fee for service may apply in other provinces where pharmacists have the authority to provide assessments. Pharmacists may authorize a prescription following a minor ailment assessment (if applicable). Prescription fee(s) may apply.
Can my pharmacist prescribe me any medication?
No. Pharmacists have authority to prescribe certain medications under their provincial scope of practice. Pharmacists are not permitted to prescribe narcotics, controlled drugs, or targeted substances.
If I don't have a primary care provider, can a pharmacist still prescribe for a minor ailment?
Yes. If you don’t have a primary care provider you can still receive a pharmacist assessment for a minor ailment provided that the condition you are presenting with is within the pharmacist‘s scope of practice. The pharmacist will retain the records of your minor ailment assessment and at your request provide additional details to your primary care provider.
