This stuff is great... I had a long scratch in the clearcoat from the back door to the rear bumper and now you can't even tell it was there... Follow the instructions and you will be amazed... It took all of about 15 minutes to sand and buff it out...

There is a video that #m has on their site www.3mauto.com is very informative to watch and goes by the directions. It works well but if you have little experience with car finishes-sanding, compounding, and polishing they could have been a little more specific.

Here is some helpful hints:
Step1 when sanding it states,  "to sand until the scratches are gone". I had several small scratches on my trunk over an 18 x 12 inch area. I sanded the entire surface not just the scratches. It says to wipe and check every 10 seconds by wiping with a dry cloth. It took me about 6-10 times sanding for 10 second intervals. You have to let it dry when you wipe and it takes about 30-60 seconds for the scratches to show up. There are not going to completely go away  but they will appear very light in appearance. the compounding will take care of the remaining part (step 2).

Step 2 Applying the compound with the purple sponge. I put compound on the sponge 3-4 times, about the size of a dime, and rubbed it in with my finger so when I started the drill it would not splatter. I went over the area about 15-20  times with the drill (18 volt) at medium to high speed and not bearing down to hard. This took 2-3 minutes and then let it dry. Wipe with a dry cloth to remove any compound before polishing, it wipes  off easily and will probably still have a little dullness to the finish.

Step 3 The easy step, just keep polish on the black sponge, I added about 5-6 times. You can't add to much because you can always just wipe off with a rag. Use high speed and keep the sponge moist with polish. Go over the area about 12-15 times, a couple minutes. The polish will be on the car use a dry rag to finish the polishing.

I did this over a second time because I wanted to go easy with the sanding as not to go through the clear coat. Worked great!

Worked great!

I had several clear coat scratches in my dark gray Highlander. The showed up as white scratches and were very obvious in sunlight. I tried every scratch remover, Meguires, Harley Davidson, No Touch, etc. Nothing would remove them. I bought the 3M scratch removal kit #39071. I followed the directions and with a little effort the scratches came right out.

I used it to remove a light set of scratches over a foot long. It took a lot of sanding, but worked great. I was skeptical of using sandpaper on my car, but the finish came out looking like new! I have no experience with paint and body work and was able to finish it in less than an hour.

This product, when it used correctly removes scratches perfectly and with very little effort. It works on all types of painted surfaces.

Great Product!

I did a lot of research about fixing the light scratches on my car trunk before purchasing this product.  I have mixed reviews about it.  It's a 3-step process.
1) Sand down the scratches with the provided sander pad and water mist.  This was really labor intensive.  I ended up attaching the sand pad to a drill to make this part go faster.  Still, I probably spent over an hour doing this.  You have to be slow, methodical, and careful about it.  You need to sand out the scratch, but not get into the paint layer.  I was disappointed that the kit only came with one small sander pad.  Definitely needed another, if not 3 of them.
2) Buff with compound.  My main complaint with this step was that the compound comes in a packet (like you'd get for salad dressing), so there's no way to seal the unused portion.  Also, it's a bit messy when your using the drill buffer, even if you spread it before you start spinning the drill.  I had a lot of cleanup to do afterwards. Otherwise, it seemed to work fine.
3) Buff with polish layer.  Exact same complaints here.  No way to seal unused portion.  Makes a bit of a mess.  It did restore the shine, which I was a bit worried about after the step 1 sanding.
Overall, it mostly worked.  The shallow scratches are gone.  Shine is back. The deeper scratches are still visible, although less visible than before.  Perhaps if I was braver, I would have sanded the larger scratches down more.  Or maybe if I had more than the single tiny sander that felt like it ran out of steam before I had attacked all of the trunk scratches.  Not sure it was worth the money and effort though.  Perhaps I was over ambitious looking for a magic bullet solution.

Mixed Results...

I tried the 3m scratch remover kit and it did not go well! When i first applied the rubbing compound (Step 2 in the instructions), there was some splatter onto the front part of the hood that I didn't wipe it up immediately, since I was working from the back of the hood to the front. I did get to it within 15 minutes, but by that time the polish had bonded to the paint and could not be removed. i tried acetone, rubbing alcohol, left a wet towel on it over night, nothing. I even tried sanding but the solvent has embedded the polish flecks into the paint and the  polish is harder than the paint (of course). so the paint around the splatter dots comes off first. My attempt at sanding just left me with low spots that can't be fixed. I contacted 3m support but the expert had no new ideas. The problem as far as i can tell is that this isn't a water based polish. It uses an aggressive solvent that softened the paint and allowed the polish to bond to the paint. I'm in trouble here that is for sure.
