The middle column of numbers have a "flakey" connection.  That means that pressing the key may or may not make the connection.  pressing hard while wiggling the keys around can make the connection. 
The connector pin order is strange.  The left column (1, 4, 7 and *) uses connector  "pin" 4 (there are no pins, just soldering holes).  The middle column uses pin 2 and the right uses pin 6.  The top row uses pin 3, the second row uses pin 8, the third row uses pin 7 and the bottom row uses pin 5.
I understand that $10 is not much,but it is a lot for something that doesn't work.
