If you're looking for a serious challenge to add to your puzzle collection, the Rubik's Phantom is a really cool twist on the classic 3x3 cube. The big "wow" factor here is the thermochromic technology, which means the cube starts out looking completely black until the heat of your touch reveals the colors. It's designed for experienced cubers who want an extra layer of difficulty, but it's also rated for kids ages 8 and up who have the patience for a more mental game.

​There are some unique features and a few things to watch out for with this model. On the plus side, the "slow reveal" mechanic makes it feel much more like a high-tech gadget than a standard toy, and it's a great way to test your memory and focus since you have to solve it before the colors fade back to black. The movement of the cube is also surprisingly smooth for a non-speed cube. However, the biggest "con" is that the color reveal depends entirely on the temperature of your hands and the room you're in. If your hands are naturally cold, or if it's a chilly day, the colors can be very faint or hard to see, which can be frustrating during a solve. On the flip side, if the room is too warm, the colors might stay visible the whole time, which takes away the "phantom" challenge. It's definitely a fun, gimmicky gift, but just be aware that you might need to "warm up" to it before the real fun starts.

You need to use your hand to cover each side one at a time .  Doing this will allow the colors
to appear.  You will need to do this as long as it takes to get all colors to come out!  Then you have the time to mix the cube, then get all sides to get back to one side color again!

Good show puzzle piece!

It starts off solid black the more you touch it the more reveals it starts off solid black the more you touch it the more reveals it's colors. The object is to solve a poster before it the object is to solve the postal before it returns black again. The heat reveals and the cold hides it. Somehow i think it should be reversed engineered. Since we know the desired outcome i think it would be more of a challenge to solve it before it turns completely black. All in all. The technology infused into the cube adds one more challenge to your dining cubing experience.  It was worth the purchase and challenge to me.

Rubik's Cube Phantom Model Edition

The Phantom 3 x 3 Rubik's Cube is really cool. It takes a little getting used to. If you let the cube cool down a little too much, the yellow squares will begin to look like white squares which can be a very confusing situation. I like to constantly keep all faces warm as I'm trying to solve the cube. The colors will last several minutes before going completely back to black. I think the temperature of the room that the cube is in will determine how long or how fast the colors will be revealed before turning back to black. The Phantom Cube is a fun cool challenge. I'm glad I bought me one. It doesn't turn and twist like a speed cube but I'm ok with that.

great extra layer of tension when solving the puzzle.  as the colors disappear back to black you need to re-warm the cube to reset your brain to proceed. good test of how to manage your anxiety, i think.

Great extra layer of tension solving

It's like an original Rubik's Cube only you can only see the color's pop up when you touch the pieces from heat from your fingers when you stop playing the colors vanish. It's a cool design I grew up playing with Rubik's cube's they are difficult to master, but fun to spend some time on, with this one here it keeps you focused more on the colors positioning before the colors disappear which is kind of harder, but cooler than a regular one.

Phantom Rules

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] this is so cool. the heat from your fingers light up the colors and that is what helps you solve it. my kids suggested if we don't want the colors lit up we stick it in the freezer and cooling it down does make it turn all black again. these Rubik's Cubes have been around for years since even when I was young but I've never seen such a cool one before. we got it as a present for a friend's birthday and he opened it and just fell in love with it. I would definitely recommend this it's cool even to me

awesome Rubik's Cube

I bought for my 7yr old because he collects rubix cubes, it takes a while holding tightly in my hand for color to show and when they do their dark and disappear quickly. I wouldn't recommend this one.👎

Color fades faster than it takes to get.😭

I got this for my bf's roommate -friend who had his birthday in hospice.  I had thought that the color variation phantom would make it more interesting, he was the kind of guy that had just about everything.. THE color sensitive heat chips DO NOT work.  I'm kind'av always chilly %26 the color would not react. My bf tried to warm it up %26 that didn't get the color to react, %26 the recipient of the gift was much sicker than I had anticipated; and even when we tried putting the Cube in the sunny window in the hospital-- The cubes did not react to the supposed "heat sensitivity" The cubes remained phantom.  eh. It was appreciated %26 the extra thought counted.  But he was so gone %26 the colors just do not show up.

This was meant as a gift- the colors don't change.

It is not put together very well. Also. The edges can get twisted if you're turning them fast so it goes off the whole algorithm. Stick with the OG.
