Sound performance is precise and detailed.

If you find this still available, immediately buy it - it is simply outstanding.  This is a real audio heavy hitter.  Many devices use a tube for audio "color" (which is just intentional audio distortion by another name).  This doesn't - the tube is actually used appropriately.  The two op amps inside are used as buffers only, one on the RCA input, and one between the DAC and the audio processor.  The tube is used as a moderate gain stage after the audio processor, and used where a tube makes sense and is value added - well inside its linear zone where it is clean and supremely noise free.   This lets the tube do what it does best - amplify close to perfectly, but where it departs from perfection it does so in a way which is sonically pleasant.  Even order harmonics and soft clipping.

The T8 is, unfortunately, marketed and priced awkwardly.  It's marketed as a pre-amp, which really it isn't.  It's a high quality DAC is what it is.  Outside of Walmart, it is priced too high for the casual user, but low enough that audiophiles turn their nose up at it as not worthy.  Which isn't true - it is supremely worthy.   This hits up there with DACs many times its price.  For example, even though a FiiO K13 R2R has much more sophisticated EQ shaping, this actually beats its sound out of the box.  Hands down, even with its stock tube.  I expect even better wound when my Northern Electric (Canadian version of Western Electric) 396a tubes, and handful of GE JAN-5670W tubes on order arrive.

I first ordered two of these T8's, then when the its price really sank in I ordered two more.  Three are earmarked for receivers in my bedroom, living room, and basement.  And one to play with on my workbench to swap the op amp out on.   My first two have just arrived, and I am listening to one through my STA-77 as I write this.  Simply outstanding sound.

Pros: - Perfect use of a tube as an actual gain stage to offset the harshness of a delta-sigma DAC, - Has every type of digital input under the sun (BT, S/PDIF coax, TOSLINK optical, USB), - Excellent sound out of the box with upgrade path to better tubes, - Cosmetically beautiful though wish the wood were darker (I sanded and stained mine).

Cons: - Would be nice if the op amp were socketed (though it's not terribly hard to mod the board), - Inclusion of LDAC in the Bluetooth side would be nice, this is trivial to add later with a dedicated LDAC -> TOSLINK decoder but it would be nice not to have to.

Aiyima T8

Excellent little DAC, almost a mini home theatre receiver in and of itself. I have combined it with a speaker amp and use it to drive my stereo TV/movie/music/gaming setup. Wasn't happy about how walmart decided to pack the item (they left it loose in a box roughly 4 times the size of the manufacturer's packaging, without any packing material) but luckily the manufacturer's packaging was very solid and kept it in one piece. 

The packaging contains basically everything you need to get started: The power adapter, tube, bluetooth antenna, USB type A to B cable, remote, and even a USB drive with the manufacturer's software. The remote takes 2 AAA batteries which are the one thing not included, so if you want to use the remote you'll have to provide those yourself. The remote is IR and works on line of sight to the small pinhole on the front of the unit, but is bright enough to not need to be an exact line of sight. I was actually able to bounce the IR light off various reflective surfaces in my room and still have it work, but if you keep the unit in a cabinet you may need to be more precise.

The sound quality on this little thing is phenomenal. I was previously using a schiit modi 3   magni heresy, which cost a bit less than 3x the price of the T8, and it's honestly their equal. Being a tube setup the T8 is less analytical, but has a much warmer and richer sound profile that makes it great for home theater or gaming uses. Having the ability to adjust the treble and bass on the fly or remotely mute the unit makes it even arguably superior to them. At this price, there's simply no competition.

It's a great time to be getting into hifi. For just over $100, you get a fun piece here that has every form of digital input (usb/opt/coax/bluetooth), a headphone output, and remote!

The DAC, while a bit older design, still works wonderfully and supports up to 192khz/24bit from USB.

I've read many comments about the sound not being as 'sparkly' on the top as other DAC's.  One must keep in mind, that this uses a tube.  Which is to say, you have flexibility to adjust the sound profile by swapping the tube out.  When a company chooses a tube, they can't please all ears, but HAVING the freedom to change it up is the beauty of a device like this.  If you want some extra clarity or sparkle on top, there are tube options available.  Try the stock tube first though - you may very well be quite happy with it.

One tip for other users - be sure to go to Aiyima's website and download their USB drivers.  I was unable to get mine to switch to anything over 48KHz at first, but after driver installation, problem solved.

Regarding the headphone amp.  For your 32-ohm headphones and below, plenty plenty of power.  They power my 250-ohm's as well but need to be turned to near-max.  Useable for sure but if you're looking to really push a set of cans HARD, simply use the RCA-out of the T8 and into a dedicated headphone amp.  

Speaking of RCA - this is also another area of adjustment.  I bounce between the USB-in and RCA-in, both coming from my PC.  Why?  In software, I can further EQ.   So if for instance I want to focus the bass bump at a specific low frequency, say, 60hz, I'll do this in software and then RCA-out to the T8.  I then have a subwoofer plugged into the Aux-out of my A08 Pro.  Slick little desktop combo.

Overall highly rated.  Is it 5-star period?  No, but is it 5-star for the price?  Absolutely yes.  Yes, you can get better, but you're also going to pay a lot more, or, you're going to lose features.  If you need an all-in-one DAC like this, something that almost acts like a receiver, for ~$100, this is where you look.  Then start playing with tubes :)

Value, value, value

I originally got the Aiyima T8 because my previous preamp did come with a remote, but got a lot more than that.

Soundwise, it dramatically improved the clarity and bass to my current setup and added the flexibility I was looking for, especially with the variety of inputs that it provides.

The QCC3031 Bluetooth chip performs well, especially against many other products in its price class. I've also tested the USB plugin streaming FLAC and Spotify and it sounds great as well.

All features worked without any issues and everything felt quality. Highly recommended.

Great value product

I primarily was going to use this as a headphone amplifier and it does not disappoint ! Fantastic with my multiple headphones. Now I am also using it with my Computer (came with usb stick drivers) Sounds incredible.  I have also used the optical in to connect my TV blows the TV speakers away. Being able to adjust Bass and treble and the volume up and down via the included remote I just sit back an relax. This it truly an all in one preamp, Dac, etc.

A masterpiece of design! The only thing I would like to see Aiyima change is the 5532 opamps to the LM4562. With the LM4562 it would have a signal to noise ratio of 120db-140db. Aiyima, please make a version of the T8 preamp with LM4562 opamps! Thank you!
