Simple installation and operation process.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I purchased this external drive primarily to digitize my CD collection.  Easy to use.  Plugged it in and my iMac recognized it. I did find that I needed to connect the double-headed power cable (which is included) for sufficient power.  With only one cable connected it would work for awhile and then freeze.  I'm connecting to iMac USB-C ports so I needed two USB-C to USB-A adapters.  There is software included for Windows, which I'm not using.  Overall, I am very pleased with this drive.  Easy to install and use.

Excellent external CD drive

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] A few years ago I purchased a MSI gaming laptop for some online classes that I was taking while I was traveling. Now that I am finished with school, I noticed my laptop did not have any games so I dug up some old games I had around the house but these old games required a CD drive and to my amazement, it did not have a CD/DVDR. Purchased this CD drive for $30 and it was plug and paly perfect. I did not even have to install the software. I have not used it to play movies or burn CDs but just to install games and it was excellent. My only complaint if any, would be that I would have preferred a tougher, overbuilt kind of case but for the money, this is the best value because it worked for my MSI laptop without any issues.

Cheap and excellent.

I purchased this product to be an external drive for my computer because the internal CD drive is broken . I was surprised at how sleek the unit is, which I like becuse it sits on top of my computer tower without taking up much space. I love electronics that you can operate without having to read a manual, and this on fits the bill perfectly. It did the job I purchased it for, by installing the software from my new printer into my computer. I'm very happy with the purchase.

Does the job

I got this to give my tablet an optical drive. Works like I expected with no problems. It comes with the USB cable which says needs to be connected to 2 USB ports to operate properly. I only had one port to connect it to and it worked just fine for me although it says it needs two. Results may vary. Good drive for the price.

Perfect for a tablet

Easy to install. I bought it to replace a failing drive. I like the burning software that came with it better than what I had in the computer. I like the idea that it's portable and can use it with other computers if needed.

If you want to watch a dvd, you need to install something other than Windows Media Player on your computer.

I bought this to capture music CDs to iTunes on my new PC running Windows 8. It interfaces well to the machine and the speed is reasonable. Does require 2 USB ports and the cords are short. I've not tried extension cords. Lack of the pictured stand is not an issue unless you are really space limited. 2 weeks old but working fine.

Works as a reader

This unit DOES NOT INCLUDE THE STAND. I read the response ASUS wrote about the stand, and understood from the response I would receive a stand. In the location I was going to place the unit, a stand would have been required. Also the advertisement does not tell you the unit requires two USB ports. The unit is also very loud, sounds cheaply built, and performance is lackluster at best. It is in my outside dumpster as I type this.

Slow and improper description

It says Mac compatible and apparently it is, but not for my system. Very strange. My iMac is running 10.8.5, not the newest, not the oldest. So what's the problem? Asus tech support says I need to update my computer. Nah, I'll return it. They have no drivers to assist me. Nothing for me to download. I think that's also rather strange. And I think the box and the specifications ought to say with which operating systems this unit is - and is not - compatible. Too bad. Looks like a good unit, but not for my Mac. Hopefully you'll have better luck with it.

Based solely on it not working with my Mac

Ok we bought a laptop from Walmart that didn't have a DVD player with the intent of using this external hd, but no it's not compatible with windows 8.1
