Applause, Applause, Applause! I feel Ms Cabot has outdone herself with the beginning to Secrets of Sweetwater Crossing series. I have been a fan of this author since I read Paper Roses. She takes heavy subject matter and weaves a story of hope and faith amidst it that show's beauty among the ruins. The mysterious deaths add the element of guessing keep you turning pages to see the outcome. I loved  Emily's compassionate heart for others even in the middle of her own tragedy. One of my favorite characters was the addition of Beulah a child with Down's syndrome and her thirst for knowledge. Craig was the perfect teacher for her and a shelter in the storm for Emily. Take a step back in time to 1882 and enjoy getting to know the characters of Sweetwater Crossing. The pacing and plot are spot on and will leave you anxiously waiting for the next installment. I highly recommend reading and adding to your keeper shelf.

When I read the publisher's synopsis of this book, I selected it on a whim. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy reading it, but I decided to select it anyway. Even after the first chapter, I was unsure if I would be able to finish it. However, the more I read, the more the story developed into a book I absolutely loved! 

It had elements that provoked surprise, compassion, frustration, and so many other emotions. It was a good example to show how everyone deals with grief and life's obstacles differently. Further, it is a good example of how a small, southern town in America really is: how isolating it can be; how important family and reputation can be in these areas. Neighbors really take care of each other (depending on who you are) or they may completely ignore you. If your reputation is tarnished they will ostracize and abandon you. 

Between hoping Emily is able to figure out what happened to her father, which NO ONE suspected, to seeing how the relationship between each character develops, and especially Emily getting past her horrible experience with her abusive husband and her looking forward to the future, this was such a wonderful story. It truly was a well executed and all storylines were concluded. 

Though I would have LOVED an epilogue, especially one that maybe Emily and Craig get married and have a baby, I fully understand that this is part of a series and those may be items that are addressed in subsequent books. 

This was truly a wonderful story. It was relatable in a way that not many books can be, especially with it being a historically set story. It was set in the 1880s, so post-civil war era Texas, but it could easily have been adapted to a modern setting. I do highly recommend this book to any readers who enjoy romance, historical romance, new beginnings, slice of life, post-civil war era, ranchers/cowboys, and strong female leads.

I highly recommend this book!

Oh, my! This book has everything that I love in a story! History, mystery, a budding romance, and the promise of second chances are all a part of this new book by author Amanda Cabot. After the Shadows is the touching story of two people who bear hurts and scars from previous experiences. Emily believes that she doesn't deserve happiness and Craig is plagued with guilt. How could either one of them ever hope to have another happy or loving relationship?

After the Shadows is the first book in the new Secrets of Sweetwater Crossing and it's whetted my appetite for what's ahead! Her historical details are spot on and she definitely knows how to pull our heartstrings with the emotional impact of this story. Cabot tastefully handles tough subjects such as domestic violence and suicide and reminds us that some tragedies are often unavoidable. This is a riveting story of hope, trust, and learning to let go and I highly recommend it to all who enjoy historical Christian novels!

Riveting Historical Fiction!

Emily has returned home, a widow, after a year of a harrowing marriage to a monster. She discovers her husband never mailed any of the letters she sent to her family, and he destroyed the ones her family had sent her. Only when going through her dead husband's things did she discover her mother had died.
Her sister, Louisa, despises her, and does not believe her protests that she did not know their mom had died. Additionally, she discovers her father, the town's minster, dead and hanging in the barn. She is the only one who will not accept that he killed himself.
After their father's death, the town treats the sisters like pariahs.
To try to save their home, and provide an income for them, Emily takes in borders, which infuriates Louisa even more.
The new schoolmaster, Craig, and his little son, Noah, along with a local widow move in with her. Some of the people boarding with her add to her life, while others are torture. As she gets involved with the lives of her guests, she finds herself standing up for a Down Syndrome child, helping with Noah, and renewing friendships. But all the while, she is wondering what really happened to her father.
Why are so many people dying in this small town? Will Emily ever get over the scars from her bad marriage, and be comfortable in the same room with a man? Can Emily find proof that her dad did not kill himself?
This five-star tale is clean, and has lots of red herrings. You will not want to put it down because it is such a good story. I recommend it to those who enjoy mysteries, stories in the 1800's, and Christian fiction.

All is Not What it Seems!

I tend to try new authors now more than I used to. This book was the second book I have read by this author, having read and reviewed a Christmas novella of hers eleven years ago. I had the opportunity to review this book, and decided to go for it.

  A good sign you like a book, is if you immediately look up their other books after you finish it.....and that is exactly what I did.

 I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was just so good. It had a great plot. I liked the setting, and I definitely liked the characters, main and otherwise. Craig and Emily made a great hero and heroine, Noah was a delightful and amusing character.....and even Beulah was a great addition to the cast.

  The book had a lot: There was some suspense, as Emily was determined to prove her father did not kill himself. There was prejudice against Beulah, and against Craig allowing a Down Syndrome kid in his school, and against Emily for allowing her in her house. There was of course romance, and a lot of lessons for the people of the town to learn. Not that many of them seemed willing to change their opinions. Emily and Craig had their own issues to overcome, and a past that influenced how they acted and reacted.

  Often as I read a book, I keep hoping for the climax of the story, and am impatiently urging the characters along. While reading this book, I got into it so much that I just enjoyed the flow of the book, hoping for the best for the main characters.

  This is the first book in The Secrets of Sweetwater Crossing. I am definitely looking forward to reading the other two books when they come out, and have already ordered a few books by this author on eBay. I definitely recommend this one.

loved it

After the Shadows, which is book one of Secrets of Sweetwater Crossing by Amanda Cabot is the entertaining and thrilling fiction historical romance novel. Emily's husband has recently passed away. However, Emily is not saddened, because of the abuse he has caused her. She has no sorrow and returns home. Her sister, Louisa, has decided to leave home after her father's sudden suicide. However, Emily does not believe her father committed suicide. Something is wrong. Left alone in a huge house with a recent fire next-door, Emily must learn how to provide income for herself. Enter Craig and his toddler son, Noah. Emily longs to be a mother. But that simply won't happen. She is delighted to welcome Craig and Noah as boarders. Craig is the new school teacher. How will it be having a young child in her home? Will she ever find out who killed her father? What are those in the town saying about Emily and her family? What really happened in her marriage? After the Shadows is a great read that will keep you entertained and enthralled. In fact, I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review, which I was happy to do.

Enthralling Fiction!

This was a most interesting book to me.  It was a historical fiction book as you can tell from the cover.  Emily, a widow of a very abusive man, returns home to Sweetwater Crossing.  There she finds herself trying to resolve the mysterious and unexpected death of her pastor father.  Craig Ferguson and his young son, Noah come to Sweetwater Crossing as the new schoolmaster.  Both of them are kindly people who look out for others.  The challenges and events that occur to both them and others causes them to work together to resolve the issues that surround them.
I loved the Texas Hill Country setting as I have a special love for this state and read everything I can that includes this state.  It was a good book and a very talented author.

Great Historical fiction

A new historical series has the setting in a small town in Texas. Emily is returning to Sweetwater Crossing after the death of her husband. She is not sorry to come back until she discovers her father has died and her sister does not believe that her husband kept letters from reaching her family. So much happens in one day! The new, widowed school teacher arrives to find his boarding house has burned. Emily offers her family home to Craig, son Noah and Mrs. Carmichael, the landlady without a home. The relationship between Craig and Noah was sweet and showcased a caring involved father.
Ms. Cabot continues her story with mystery, blooming romance and prejudices common to the times and small communities. She brings the characters to life and shows that Christian principles were lived out, as well as illustrates evil to overcome.
I look forward to the next in the series as Louisa, a younger sister, takes center stage.

Historical Texas Intrigue

After the Shadows by Amanda Cabot is the first book in the Secrets of Sweetwater Crossing series. I have enjoyed this author's previous books, but I think this series is going to be my favorite. I enjoyed the small-town, southern historical feel of the story, where everyone knows everyone and their business. The story's cast of characters was original and entertaining. You really get the feel of daily life in Sweetwater Crossing!
Emily and Craig's story is punctuated by repeated sorrow. But I admired their conviction to turn to their faith and trust God through adversity. They are both inspirational in their daily walk with the Lord, especially Emily's generous, servant's heart. I fell in love with her character immediately and cheered for her happiness throughout the story. 
This story has a slow-burn, sweet romance that is well worth the wait. But alongside blossoming love is also sorrow and mystery. I enjoyed the underlying mystery in this book and following alongside Emily and Craig as they pursued clue after clue. Watching them work together on the problem only strengthened their relationship on the page. They are so sweet together!
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed After the Shadows. Despite the far-reaching grief in the story, it is still one of hope and love. Fans of historical romance, especially those set in the West, will enjoy this book.

A Story of Loss and Hope

After the Shadows has a mystery, romance and faith interwoven in it. It kept me guessing as to who killed Emily's father. I liked how Cabot slowly brought out the characters and developed them as the story went along. This development showed how Emily and Craig's relationship grew in time. I'm looking forward to reading the next book.
