I have been using for years the outstanding Allsop Cool Platform, which does what is supposed to be doing (keep a laptop raised away from the blankets or private parts underneath) very well.  Unfortunately that appears not to be in production any longer.  This Sub-Zero Platform is almost identical, except that it is more contoured and adds a fan, which is reasonably but not completely quiet, moves a modest amount of air... and is perfectly useless in most cases as the laptop has its own, better designed  fans.

 Therefore the  first thing I did when receiving this platform was to get rid of the fan.  The fan assembly consists of two parts that are glued to each other, but they can be forced apart using some force applied to a large screwdriver or even better a butter knife.  Once the fan was out of the way I ended up with a rigid and contoured platform that keeps my laptop's bottom raised away and allows unobstructed air flow to the bottom vents.  The bottom lip is small and so the laptop had the tendency of sliding toward the user (unlike my old Cool Platform), but other than this I am pretty happy with how the stand ended up and so I can definitely recommend it.  Still, I wish Allsop would bring back their old Cool Platform, which was overall a better product.

Great laptop stand, but consider removing the fan

I read other reviews some good some not so good. Here's my 2 cents worth. The fan does make noise that I can here (and my hearing isn't perfect) but it isn't much more in my book than the built in CPU fan on my laptop and isn't distracting to me. The only real issue I had was my laptop would slide around pretty easy on it....so being as I'm a guy and as a lot of us think we are Mr. FIX-IT I bought some webbed tool box drawer liner (it worked in my tool box so why not try) from a national tool sales company for $6 give or take depending on your location and I put a strip about 1 and a half inches wide on the very outer edges of the platform and so it wouldn't slide on the desk a strip on lower front portion and it is solid as a rock perfect for me and I'm going to buy another and fix just like this 1just in case. A 17" fits on it but hangs over edges but it works great!

Good item

Purchased in late August 2012, motor started making noise occasionally in December 2012 and now it's total junk in late January 2013. It was in use an average 12 hours per day. Fortunately it has a one year warranty, but I wouldn't buy it again...

Used for five months and it's JUNK
