This is a wonderfule help in the workshop and my second one. Although the original unit was purchased as a hobby aid about a two decades ago under the brand name "Dremel," the new Alvin unit is essentially identical. Some of the hardware is now "cheaper" but so far it is perfectly adequate. The light is helpful at the workbench and the new unit allows me to have one on each end. The magnifyer assists with detail work where reading glasses are insufficient.

I originally had a metal 10" magnifier with an oval fluorescent lamp. I used it constantly for close up work when constructing plastic scale models. Unfortunately the mounting clamp cracked so the unit could not be supported to a desk. I went a few weeks without a lighted magnifier and realized that it was too critical for my hobby. I found the Alvin magnifier lamp on-line and felt the price was the most competitive to the other units. The previous magnifier I had cost over $150. This unit was approximately $50 and serves the same purpose as a more expensive unit. I highly recommend this model. It uses a 60w light bulb which illuminates the work space and the 4" magnifier is fine for most close up work.

Great magnifier for model building.

The product is fine and does what I need it to do...provide good light at my desk while I am studying. An important feature of a lamp of this style is that it will hold it's position once set. This required adding a locking washer in the joint at the lamp itself. The locking washer included with the product was very poor quality in that the hole in the middle was very large and didn't keep in position to do what was needed. I used it, but it wasn't an easy task to get it where it needed to be.

Once in use, I am very happy. I hope it continues to stay where I have it set and will not be moving it around much at all. If that is needed, this would not work out for you.
