“Harper Reynolds inches forward, hoping she hadn't made a mistake in coming there.” - Opening line of Always Look Twice by Elizabeth Goddard

Always Look Twice by Elizabeth Goddard is a continuation of the Uncommon Justice series following on from book one, Never Let Go so I sat down to enjoy reconnecting with characters of which I was already fond. Heath McKade is our leading man in this one and he reconnects with his childhood friend, Harper, as she flees the scene of witnessing a murder.

Whilst the sheriff doubts Harper's story, there is no supporting evidence, Heath comes to her aid and they continue to investigate. The small town is also besieged with mailbox bombs and, between the two cases, the local police force is stretched thin.

Harper has returned to the town with her sister, the last stop on a year long road trip to help her recovery from the trauma she suffered in childhood and on the job as a crime scene photographer. As a character, she is easy to relate to and rout for! Her fear of the murder is palpable.

Heath is equally stalked by past traumas, one of which is in the previous book. It's not essential to have read it to enjoy this one but it's equally good so I recommend starting at the beginning.

My favourite aspect of this series is the supporting cast, it's rich and creates the small town feel which I so enjoy. In doing so, Elizabeth creates a place to which I want to keep returning. Full of suspense and action, I didn't put it down until I reached the ending. Harper's murder story is wrapped up but I do hope there is another in the Uncommon Justice series.

If romance suspense novels are your thing, this is one not to be missed! Christianity is a part of both our lead characters and I enjoyed how Elizabeth included Biblical principles in the story, I highly recommend it, five out of five on the enjoyment scale!

Full of suspense and action, not to be missed

Elizabeth Goddard has done it again! The intense action begins on page one and it never lets up!! What starts out as a chance to photograph a black bear in its natural habitat at Jackson Hole, Wyoming,  turns into Harper Reynolds witnessing a murder being committed.  Suddenly, she herself is the murderer's next target and what follows is a story filled with guns, bombs, and intense danger as Harper and her childhood friend Heath McKade desperately try to discover who the killer is. Nothing seems to go right as they try to stay ahead of this unknown person and  there is also the extreme tension that comes from Harper and Heath's personal connection during their struggle to stay alive.  Even though there are so many obstacles to overcome, they find themselves reviving a friendship that is twenty years old.

 'It was as if an invisible force that spanned time and distance had brought them together again.'  (p. 184)

Author Elizabeth Goddard demonstrates once again her ability to increase heart rates and affect emotions and it isn't just from the adventure and danger. It is apparent that Harper and Heath are physically attracted to each other but their past history and the hurts they have both endured seem to be roadblocks to a future together. Their efforts to stay alive and their attempts to forget the past allow Goddard to showcase the importance of faith and prayer in both of their lives.

"God, have you brought me through all of this only to die here and now?" (p. 346)

If you love mystery and adventure and if you enjoy romantic suspense with a faith-filled message, you will want to read Always Look Twice, the second book of the Uncommon Justice series. Elizabeth Goddard proves why she is such a well-loved author!

Excellent Romantic Suspense!

Always Look Twice, Uncommon Justice by Elizabeth Goddard
Always Look Twice is book 2 in the Uncommon Justice series. Never Let Go book 1, was a page turner but I promise Always Look Twice is much deeper.  It starts out with intense action and just keeps going.  It is full of riveting action that will have you at the edge of your seat. Harper finds herself photographing the wildlife in Bridger – Teton National Forest. The battle begins as she catch's a murder in the lens of her camera. Heath helps her fight the bad guy. Always Look Twice is a powerful intriguing tale of faith, justice and fast paced action sure to keep you turning the pages. Elizabeth Goddard's characters are believable and have you rooting for them. I have enjoyed every book of hers I have read. This book is a clean read, romantic suspense.   I give this one 5 stars. Always Look Twice can be read as a stand along but is a great compliant to Never Let Go. I'm not sure if there is a book 3 but I can't wait to get my hands on it if there is.

Great Book

The story is a non stop thriller from start to finish. Harper is a very like able character who has been through a tough time. Her job as a crime scene photographer was becoming too  emotionally draining  for her. I want to stop here for a moment. I applaud the people that do this job for a living. They see things that is unimaginable and terrifying everyday. Without their efforts we would not be able to prove who committed a crime. I liked Harper because she realized she needed a break from this demanding job.

Her love for photography takes her into the woods to take scenic pictures one day that looked to be a pleasant outing. I have heard this said about cameras, “The camera never lies.” This one little statement for me is the focus of this story. What Harper sees through her camera on that unforgettable day will turn her life upside down. Can you imagine looking through the lens of your camera and witness a murder? I would run as fast as I could and never look back.

The book is well written with intrigue and danger that jumps off the pages. Harper is in danger but for some reason not everyone believes she saw anything. Losing her camera as she tries to get away from the scene will prove to be a huge mistake. The camera has evidence that someone doesn't want anyone to find.

I loved Heath and how protective he was with Harper. He believes her and tries to help her find her camera and keep her safe at the same time. There is one scene in the book where I was on the edge of my seat. Harper and her sister are in a camper and suddenly it starts moving. That one terrifying moment knowing you have no control becomes a life or death situation. The author is brilliant at writing scenes that make you gasp and start hearing noises in your own surrounding. I have not read a book with this intensity in a long time.

Who is behind the murder and why can no one find the body? The author cleverly gives subtle hints to this question which can lead to speculation for readers. . The book is a wonderful journey through secrets, trust, danger and and letting go of the past. The faith element in the story is placed at perfect times and I did enjoy Harper and Heath dealing with their past. This has been a great story and I look forward to the next in the series.

Intense

Wow, what a story!  This one drew me in from the very first page.  All I wanted to do was to keep reading until the mystery was solved.  The setting in the Jackson Hole area was perfect and played its part in building the suspense in this book.  The characters were compelling and I instantly connected with Harper.  Even as she was struggling to overcome her anxiety over tragic events in her life, she stayed strong and used her talent to help find a killer.  This storyline had plenty of twists in it.  At one point, I thought I had the mystery solved, only to have another clue come along to make me realize I was wrong. As Heath and Harper struggle to catch the killer before he kills again, the affection they had for each other in their childhood grows in to something stronger.  I also appreciated the thread of faith that was woven into the storyline.  

This is an excellent Christian suspense novel and I'm looking forward to (hopefully) reading more about these characters.

An excellent Christian Suspense novel

The more books I have come to read by this author, the more I am convinced that Elizabeth Goddard is a master at suspense. She has a way of weaving emotion and suspense expertly together, and of making you come to suspect even the most seemingly trustworthy people. She doesn't reveal the murderer until the very last minute.
That being said, here's what I loved about this story:
The characters. I was instantly drawn into the world of Jackson Hole along with Harper and Heath. There were many emotions and backstories that were painful, which is something I generally roll my eyes at in suspense, but Goddard expertly delivered the emotion in a way that wasn't typical or cliche. She also wrote in a way that made me feel with the characters. I could feel Heath's pain and Harper's fears and I felt as though I was them.
The suspense. As I said before, Goddard can deliver some amazing, edge-of-your-seat suspense! She has this way writing that makes you suspect every single person in the story, even though you know that isn't possible. And honestly, throughout the story, I did have a few suspects, but in the end I was completely surprised at the “big reveal,” which always makes the story better.
The setting. I'm not always a big fan of the small-town settings, but I did enjoy this one greatly and how it gave so much character to the story. The people in Jackson Hole are unique and added so much color to the story, it's hard to not like them!
Lastly, the faith and emotion. I loved, loved, loved how relatable both Harper and Heath were, but I also loved seeing them go on their faith journeys. They both had some things to overcome, but they couldn't do it without God, so it was wonderful to see that aspect of the story along with the wonderful suspense.
Goddard has written yet another wonderful masterpiece of a novel and I truly cannot wait until her next book releases! I think that if you enjoy suspense or romantic suspense, you should definitely give this one a try!
