This is purely decoration - it is not an actual bookend that keeps books from falling over. A real bookend is either very heavy (this is not) or has a piece that goes under the books so their own weight is acting as a counter (this does not). I was hoping that this one had that, but it was impossible to tell from the picture what was, or wasn't, under the books. The only books this works for are those that stand up on their own. In that case, why would I need a bookend?
