As Black Diamond's lightweight trail series trekking pole designed for four-season, on-trail versatility, the Trail Shock Pro features the terrain-absorbing benefits of Control Shock Technology, combined with the quick deployment and collapsibility of the new SmashLock quick-release system. The SmashLock mechanism allows you to quickly deploy the telescoping pole and lock it into place with an easy-to-hear click (keep the FlickLock Pro closed during deployment). I bought these poles because my 60 year old wrists can't take the impact for a whole season....after 3 weeks of daily use on these poles my wrists feel great.
The quick set feature is nice for back packing and the shock absorption is smooth even in colder weather

Went on a 5  mile trek on unimproved trails and these trekking poles handled it like it was nothing.  Lightweight, sturdy and able to handle all the terrain.

Amazing product

I got these to give myself a little more balance on the trail and they work excellent. Really sturdy construction and comfortable grips. I like the shock absorber feature a lot and can see these being a part of my hiking rig for years to come.

Comfy, sturdy, simple

We bought 2 pairs of these Trail Pro Shock Poles in 2010 and have thousands of miles on them, on and off trail, mostly in the Sierra. July of 2019 a flick lock failed on one pole on the PCT. When I called customer service, Amy identified the correct size replacement flick-lock, (which wasn't available online) and sent it out right away.

Love these long lasting poles!

I used for the first time in a 50 mi backpack trip. It was great for absorbing the impact of your are on a quick pace hike in shale or rock. You can tighten the clamps with the provided allen wrench so bring it with you.  They are very light and great hand-feel. I would highly recommend

Update: Black Diamond quickly sent me a new pair after one failed. I've put roughly 100 miles on them so far and they have held up great. Just be gentle when extending them from the collapsed position.

Old Review: One of the poles broke after 2 weeks of daily use on paved trails. However, after submitting a warranty claim BD sent me a new pair within the week. I will update this review after I break in the new pair.

Not bad, be gentle in the cold.

I would give these a 5-star it the lower half didn't rattle. Since the switch from a flick-lock to a "smash-lock" the bottom most section is no longer adjustable and it makes a bit of a racket, mind you it isn't maddening but if you were trying to go stealth, it may need a wrap or two of gaff tape.

Otherwise I love them, grips are comfortable, tips grab well on rock and other hard surfaces, swap-able baskets (I read somewhere someone got powder baskets with theirs, mine didn't).

Nice Collapsable

Just purchased these poles for myself and my girlfriend. We did our first hike, mainly on dirt incline and hard Rock near the top.

Pros:
Comfortable grips
Metal strong, durable and easy to use flicklocks
Very durable
Great looks
Smash lock on the lower pole makes getting started on the trail super fast
Good size

Cons:
There is really only one hut its big. I bought these with the intent to prevent vibrations to my hands, wrists and arms. I have never had poles that vibrated so much. Both mine and hers do the same vibration... unlike my old cheaper aluminum black diamond poles which hardly vibrate at all. 

Is there something I'm missing? Is the vibration a defect or is it a new feature that I need to get used to?

Great features, with one setback

I really have to categorize this new verison of the Pro Shock as "why cant they just leave a good thing alone". My older version of these poles have taken me to some of the highest peaks in the world, including the Himalaya and the Andes.  I always liked the ability to adjust both the upper and lower sections of the poles with the infinite number of flick-lock adjustments in both sections. Sometimes I ascend slopes so steep that I need to keep my poles super short. The designer of the new version of these poles, who added the "smashlock" techology, is most likely not a true mountaineer. The new Smashlock on the lower pole section (which replaces a second flick-lock which the older version of the poles had), allows only 2 positions---fully closed or fully open. As a result, even when the upper pole section is collapsed all the way, there is no way to shorten the lower pole. WHY???  All for the luxury of having a lower pole section that may fail if I put enough pressure on it. No thanks. I hope Black Diaomond goes back to the 2 flicklock design on these poles. Until then, I guess I have to go to another brand like Leki.

HATE the new SmashLock design!

I just bought these and am not happy with clicking noise that they make. The noise seems to be coming from where the lower pole meets the smash lock system. Is this normal, or is there a way to adjust it to be quieter? I'm going to be doing some multi day hikes this summer and feel that click click click click might drive be batty.
