It is the perfect size for outdoors activities like hiking or bicycling. I would use something different for school or for a laptop. I like that there is a hidden pocket on the back, perfect for keys.

My 8th grader is not allowed to carry her regular backpack between classes; they can only use drawstring backpacks.  Boy, are drawstring backpacks flimsy...They don't even last an entire semester.  The one I bought her for this school year already came apart after five weeks.  So they're cheap in cost - and quality.  They always fray at the edges or rip at the holes.  I couldn't tell from the pictures, but this one, the fabric is doubled so it's heavier than the regular flimsy drawstring backpacks.  And a little bigger.  And the pockets are a nice design feature.  I have high hopes this one will last...maybe through the end of the school year?

NOT Water proof  I tested it by placing a dry paper towel inside and then sat the bag on a wet counter top. the paper towel was soaked within 30 seconds!! 
This product is not the least bit water proof or even water resistant.  It's just a bag with straps and shiney material.
