Lots of great fresh chips using our Sage fryer, shame it has been discontinued and parts not available because ours no longer works following accidentally dropping the control unit in the washing up bowl

Life changing kitchen appliance

Breville's Deep Fryer is a quality fryer that delivers fast fried foods in a concise and reasonable timeframe.  It is easy to clean thanks to a stainless steel oil pan.  The digital display allows for an easy and straightforward path to cooking foods we all love.  The purchase price was quite affordable.

overall great but some annoyances. the power code is absolutely rage bait. it will not stay in place. if you breathe wrong it will fall off. magnets are not a practical attachment method. 
the fryer will overheat the oil if you're not careful so you really need to have a second thermometer to read the true temperature and not just the display which only shows the goal temperature once it's reached. i had it set to 375 for donuts and the oil started smoking. the true temperature was close to 400 which is dangerous. the basket is small so you can only fry a couple donuts at a time which leads to overheated oil. 
the fryer did an excellent job of frying mozza sticks, french fries, and donut holes and seems more suited to small bite size items. 
overall it's great. the oil basin is easy to clean. the machine is easy to assemble. the precision controls are finicky and complicated and took several attempts to learn. 
i wanted to love this as i am usually a big fan of breville but this particular model needs some engineering adjustments inspired by people who actually cook in real life.

great results, headache to use

I am a Breville fan and have been for some years. The build quality, is great and normally so is the innovation. The Smart Fryer is well made and performs very well. Oil heats up quickly and stays at temperature as you'd expect. Controls are easy and well thought out. Safety features include magnetic plug which some have criticized but I personally think is a plus. Deep fat fryers are inherently dangerous and this safety feature is a good idea though I would appreciate about 6" more cord. Big side, 'keep cool', side handles are also a very welcome feature. I also love the big top handle and well fitting lid with viewing window. The basket is a good size but might be a bit bigger if you're frying for a family and want to avoid multiple batches to get your meal out without some of it getting cold.

That's where the innovation story ends I'm afraid and that's a shame because apart from the control panel there's not a lot going on here that's unique in comparison to the competition. It's a shame because these things have really not changed in form factor for decades. Here's a punch list of what I'd suggest...

-finish/fold over all edges of the steel; internal outer shell edges are sharp
-use thicker steel for the exterior shell
-the heating element should/must be detachable from the control console and it should also dishwasher safe; total no-brainer as getting underneath it to clean next to the control panel is a pain
-research and use a better material for the exterior of the control panel enclosure; the dull grey/black/brown plastic is difficult to get oil off of especially with the gangly/delicate heating element permanently attached
-increase the capacity
-make the tank deeper so that splash and aerosolized oil is absolutely minimized
-consider reusable filters for the lid
-perhaps an optional lid that allows for the raising and lowering of the basket in a fully enclosed manner to reduce oil mess in the kitchen
-mold one of the tank corners for more direct-stream pouring

Solid Performance/Value - Could Be Better

This is a very sturdy fryer. The display is very easy to read and it has excellent controls and settings. The basket attachment is wonderful. My only complaints are that the power cord is magnetic and does not feel very solidly attached to the unit. It has not become detached, but it does not feel very solid. Also, the minimum amount of oil does not cover even a small amount of French fries. I had to add enough oil to come up to the maximum level in order to completely cover the potatoes in the basket.

Better than a Fry Daddy, but has some drawbacks

Although new, it never worked at all, we got an error 2 message within a minute of starting it!  We returned it to the store and got our money back, your return policy being too cumbersome in the context of the Holiday period.
