Can be flimsy, but also solid and durable.

This is my third serger. The first was a cheap one from JoAnn fabrics and I taught myself to use it. It was good for a first serger but didn't have differential feed and had only one foot and was very difficult to thread and keep threaded. The second was a Pfaff and I took classes at a sewing machine shop and purchased a workbook to go with it. It was good for a while but difficult to thread and change stitches. I had it for about ten years. This Brother 1034D came with three feet, has differential feed, and is really easy to thread and set up for different applications. I expect it to last for several years and will use it frequently. I sew for my grandkids and myself and do garment and home dec sewing. I make lots of fleece and flannel blankets and use the serger to hem them with wooly nylon thread. The hems are a breeze on this new serger.

Really great serger for the price

I have been using other people's sergers for years and finally had a small budget to buy my own. I went back and forth do I buy a used high end one or a new one. I have three children, most of my projects are Halloween costumes, sung dresses, American Girl doll clothes, fleece winter gear and what not. I went with this and purchased the three year warranty just incase. I couldn't be more happy! As with all sergers you have to get the tension just right depending on the type and quality of thred you are using. You do have to remove a piece in the lower looper area in order to do a rolled hem but it's easy to remove and replace and so worth it because of the professional look a rolled hem gives you. The machine uses standard machine needles which is a bonus. The cover it comes with is not much better quality then a plastic grocery bag so you might want to invest in a better cover, or make one with your new amazing machine. I was concerned with quality at this price point but so far it is a great product. Brother is a well known brand and Jo-Ann's even sells this machine, just at a much higher price.

Great Machine!

I read reviews of this Brother 4-3 Serger on several sites and on all sites it was very highly rated. I bought one and have found it to be an awesome, easy to use serger. It comes pre-threaded with color coded threads so you can test serging it as soon as you get it. I liked that - all I had to do was un pack and plug it in, and already I could test run it. Then came the hardest operation - re-threading it to (in my case) black thread.. The dvd and the instructions booklet gave very good instructions on how to do this, walking me through the process. In minutes I was off serging my own items. I like/liked this serger so much, and found it at such a good price, that I bought a second one - so now (because I do a lot of sewing) I keep one always threaded in black thread and one always threaded in white. I'd always been scared of sergers before, I thought they were very had to use and thread - but this one has sold me on serging and I am very very happy I got it.

Awesome, Easy to Use Serger

This is my first serger and I love it! I reviewed the Singer and the Brother online and out of almost 600 reviews, only 18 were 1 to 3 stars on this machine, whereas the Singer had around 44 reviews and they were mostly bad and mediocre. I read the book and watched several videos on youtube before I tested it out. I broke the thread on the lower looper right off the bat because I forgot to pull the spindle up all the way before I tried to test it. I went to the video on youtube from the lady that shows you how to thread it (not the cd that came with it) and I re-threaded it with no problems. I have sewed one dress and re-threaded with white thread since it came with multicolored thread that was not working with my color theme. I threaded it with no problems and the machine sewed perfectly. I have been sewing since I was a young girl and I have used several brands of sewing machines throughout my life. I also have the Brother Disney Embroidery machine. I think it will do nicely for what projects will be sewing at home.

Great machine!

Bought the Singer serger from the Wal-Mart store, it did work, however, was not completely satisfied so ordered the Brother 1034D Serger from Wal-Mart.com, it is a much nicer serger than the Singer as it came with more accessories, a catch material tray and a couple of feet the Singer did not have. The foot lift lever is a lot nicer on the Brother being an easy reach lever to the right side of the machine and to me runs a little smoother than the Singer. The foot lift lever on the Singer is where you have to reach around the back of the foot and the Sergers carrying handle has a tendency to get in the way. The Brother works best and is the best bang for your dollar. Threading is not complicated, it is only intimidating if you believe it's going to be, not a problem at all. Really I don't know why the Wal-Mart stores don't carry the Brother over the Singer or both for that matter. Buy it, trust me you can't go wrong and will not be disappointed. Took the Singer back to the store after having read the reviews and received the Brother from Wal-Mart.com, ordered it, it was delivered when promised by Fed-EX no complaints. MY wife is very pleased with the product.

Best buy

I've owned 3 sergers over the last 26 years and this is the best!  Very easy to thread. Threading order is important. The manual is terrible, but, there are many useful YouTube videos!  Only use sewing machine oil, and oil before first use!! (The manual doesn't tell you until the end). Read the parts of the manual for every adjustable dial and switch!  Most fabrics use different settings!  Read the charts so you'll know the settings. Knit fabrics need knit fabric needles. Regular sewing machine needles work for this machine!  It is VERY LOUD!!  Louder than any serger I have used. Keep the knife area free of lint. Some fabrics, like terry cloth, produce a lot of lint!!  A toothbrush gets lint off better than the dinky brush. This serger does a variety of stitches!  I can't emphasize enough that you need to read the whole manual before first use. Take time to google what you don't understand. I recommended looking at YouTube before first use too. It is very helpful to label all knobs and switches with a dry erase marker directly on the machine for quick reference!  Label your threading order too!  Troubleshooting guide in the manual is pretty good!  Don't forget to buy thread too!  And needles!!  You'll want to change them a lot. Dull ones and damaged ones can damage your machine!!  Enjoy your serger!!

Great for beginners (advice here!!!!)

I purchased this serger as a back up serger to the one I already own. So far it has worked really well. It doesn't seem to be as strong as the one I have already (New Home 234D) but it will be a good machine for what I plan to use it for. I love, love, love the removable area for sewing in small areas like sleeves and cuffs. And the lever that allows you to drop the knfe is also great. I haven't changed the thread that came on the machine originally yet, but I'm sure it'll be fine and fairly simple to change.

I called the Brother company to ask how this machine compares to the ones sold by dealers of higher end machines and the representative reminded me that dealers are selling you support and, in most cases, classes to learn how to use your machine and they disguise these amenities by saying that they are free, when in actuality they are worked into the cost of the machine. So with that said, there are tons of blogs and videos to support you in using this serger.

One tip I saw in a YouTube video that I would like to share. You should oil the machine before you ever sew on it. This is mentioned in the manual, but not until the end. Most of us will take it out of the box and since it's already threaded, just start using it. Resist the urge and oil it first and it will run a lot quieter and smoother.

So far so good

I really love this serger!! It is easy to use and to thread. I also own another serger that cost a few thousand, which is currently getting repaired.  I purchased this one just to use while my other one is being repaired. I like this one so much, that I may get a second one!! Sews like a dream through thick and thin fabrics, and uses standard sewing machine needles.

Fantastic serger!!!

The machine worked as it should and they are work horses. I had to return it do it odor. It was over whelming. Not Sewing machine oil, it was something else. Tried a fan 4 a few days no help, was disappointed. This is not normal. Have no idea what or how that accrued, but it cam out of the box like that. I do recommend the Brother 1034D Machine. Using a friend for over a year love it. Take the time to learn how to Thread it, Add stickers so you know the order of threading. The order is a must. Also, use large thread spools or cone thread it doesn't like small thread spools. Cones are best in the machine I use. I had planed on buying my own,( my friend might need hers). It is easy to use if you take the time to learn how to thread %26 use it. Its great for beginners , but YouTube is your best teacher. Stick with it you'll be glad you did.

Horrible odor, not normal

After extensive research, I decided to purchase the Brother Serger 1034D. It was delivered intact, threaded and on time; however, the WHEEL did not turn for the machine to start serging. I had to manually FORCE it to turn. I took it to the recommended dealer to discuss the matter and they said to oil the unit as instructed in the manual which I did. Granted, after a STRUGGLE TO GET THE WHEEL TO TURN, the machine did start working; however, the wheel is still VERY HARD to turn. It sews beautifully, but makes more noise then it should to get it started. I plan to take it back to the recommended dealer for review and may have to return it. It is brand new and still under warranty. I'm very disappointed and hope this problem can be resolved.
