I'm a Coleman collector and restore of Coleman lanterns I wanted one  of these new 639C models that burn kerosene to use also for my collection how come Mann keeps making these liquid fuel lanterns there's definitely a niche out there still for them they are really nice. Leonard Coleman makes good product. Still glad to see they do.

I've owned many products from Coleman, always been intrigued with the lanterns since my first encounter camping as a youngster with family. Living in Florida most of my life hurricanes have been a constant reminder the need for a reliable light source, always used white gas lanterns as a source of light from the beginning. Fuel is always an issue for long term storage, degradation over time has been a problem for me. 
Kerosene turned out to be the answer I was looking for. Researching blogs led me to the Coleman kerosene lantern, high quality, stability, economical and reliability that I was looking for. Is it for everyone? Not really, yes it supplies reliable lighting for those fun times camping, ⛺️ but is indispensable during hurricanes. More work to light by adding alcohol to the preheat the generator, but the safety factor being harder to light kerosene over white gas. My first hurricane was Donna 1960, living in the Florida Keys, now at seventy years young Coleman still offers peace of mind I require. Thank you Coleman.

In times os good and bad.

This lantern is a beast! The Coleman 639C puts out a ton of light—easily enough to light up a whole campsite, backyard, or even a good-sized room during a power outage. The glow is bright, steady, and white, so it actually feels like daylight compared to smaller lanterns.

Build quality is excellent. It feels heavy-duty and solid, not like the flimsy stuff you see today. With a little care, I can easily see this lasting for decades, much like other Coleman lanterns I own.

One thing worth mentioning is that it does require a quick preheating step before lighting. Honestly, it's a very minor extra step—just a quick prime with alcohol—and after that the lantern roars to life and runs smoothly. In practice, it adds less than a minute to setup and is more than worth it for the performance you get.

What I really like is the flexibility of kerosene as a fuel. It's cheaper than Coleman fuel, easy to find almost anywhere, and it stores really well. It gives me peace of mind that I'll always have fuel on hand.

Between the quality construction, impressive brightness, and the practicality of kerosene fuel, the Coleman 639C is a true workhorse. If you're looking for a lantern that balances durability with excellent light output, this one is hard to beat.

Bottom line: if you want a lantern that's super bright, tough as nails, and fuel-flexible, the 639C is a fantastic choice. Highly recommend!

A Rugged, Bright, and Reliable Lantern

Great lantern. Would recommend it over a dual fuel model, and certainly over a propane one, if you are on the fence. The kerosene lanterns need to be primed with denatured alcohol, but that is a simple process that takes a minute or two. Good quality kerosene is cheaper and more available than Coleman fuel, and it's less volatile. At the end of the day, if you only want a light source, get an LED headlamp or lantern. If you, however, are the type of person that prefers a manual transmission over an automatic, enjoys the process of learning how things work, or if you just like the idea of having something your kids can remember when they are older, buy this lantern. The only negative I have is I wish you could get it in red. I would also point out that the black hard plastic Coleman case works perfectly for this lantern. For some reason Coleman does not acknowledge this, but I got one off Amazon and it works fine.

Will likely outlast me

Outstanding lantern.  I collect and refurbish Coleman lanterns and stoves.  I was tickled when this became available.  I wish I could have bought two more.  I will never use batteries at camp.  I hope more liquid gas appliances will come soon!  It'd make my year to see a "seasons" lantern available in the U.S.

GPA is still king

Well, after a rocky road trying to get the Coleman 639 Kerosene lantern all is good!! The lantern arrived in time for the first camping trip of the year and it performed GREAT! Just like the Old Days with the generator warmer. Single mantle brute enough to light the night!

639A Kerosene Lantern

I had been wanting to add a kero lantern to my collection and decided to purchase a current model.  
The lantern came well packaged with everything need to get going, minus the fuel.  Just a few minutes to set up and it was up and running. 
The lantern provides a wonderful bright light with good adjustment and seems to be quite fuel efficient, I don't believe I've had to refill it yet over the last month, with I believe close to 8hrs run time.
I'd happily purchase another of these 639C lanterns again!

Solid Lantern!

Awesome that Coleman is still making a kerosene lantern! The kerosene powered 639 Series was first introduced in 1970, so you know it's going to be dependable! Very bright and easy to light once you understand the start-up process. I bought this for my motorhome camping as it is safer to transport kerosene than white gas (it takes a much higher temperature to ignite kerosene) and kerosene has a much longer storage life vs. white gas. A liquid fuel powered lantern adds way more nostalgia to a campsite vs. LED lighting. If you have ever considered purchasing a kerosene powered lantern I urge you to buy this one - you won't be disappointed.

Worth every penny of the purchase price!

Do Coleman lanterns really need a review, They have been shedding light on the world for as long as I can remember.   I have 21 Coleman lanterns, some are more than 50 years old and still work perfect.  I got this newer model because I needed another source of fuel, kerosene, just in case .

Very nice lantern, well built.

The first time I lit it up it seemed troublesome and not worth it. The second time, it worked flawlessly and now I love it. Yes, it does seem a burden to have to buy rubbing alcohol as well as kerosene. But you simply fill the primer cup with alcohol, light it, and wait. It eventually lights up and you simply turn the knob to the left for full brightness. This is a simplistic explanation. It burns bright, and I love the shape of the globe.

Great once you get used to it

Generates an astonishing amount of carbon monoxide. Even if used outdoors, anyone downwind is at risk from the CO being emitted. I used a digital CO monitor to take measurements. I'm planning to return it.
