I have been using Cabot's gold drenched walnut, and the product does exactly what it states, I've been using it on my deck for the last four years with very little maintenance on it, it looks exactly like my interior floors I get comments from everyone on how beautiful my deck looks I will submit some photos for you to see.

I had read the reviews and seen the negative ones as well as the good ones. Having just spent a ton of money on a mahogany  deck, I sure didn't  want to botch it with bad product.  Well, Cabot Gold  worked great, looks terrific. I used the  fireside cherry (four boards at a time) interspersed  by every fifth board in moonlit mahogany. It looks fantastic on the nes boards, and fantastic on the older part of the deck as well. Truly looks like hardwood floor outside, and the use of two colors adds some visual interest.

I was concerned....

I love the semi glossy look of Cabot Gold.  We have used it on both new cypress wood and 2 year old formally stained cypress.  We sanded and vacuumed both before application.  The first coat is dull, but well absorbed by the wood.  We sanded w/ 220 grit and vacuumed before applying the second coat. The second coat is what makes the shine. Surprisingly, there is very little difference in appearance between the old and new wood.  I should add that we removed the deck boards to sand them and allowed them to cure in the garage before reinstalling. My only complaint is that for it to look really awesome, it is definitely labor intensive.  Hopefully this product will last longer than the last stuff.

Porch looks like the deck on rich man's yacht

Wheelchair User - I power washed the deck stripping 99.9% old surface. I waited to sand the deck until a few months later when it was between rainy days. Power washing is not enough prep. The grain swells up from water, this makes it harder for stain an protective material to really soak in. I used 60 grit sandpaper and went to town with a random orbit palm sander. Blew off the sawdust with a leaf blower. Then took one of my grill cleaning brushes and hand sanded the entire deck with that to get the grain and such that the palm sander missed... Yes, this is a lot more work. I want as much of the wood grain being exposed as I can get...

The Prepwork Is Key

I notice a lot of people complaining about how bad their experience was and it sounds a lot like they didn't know what they were getting themselves into. I pressure washed, then used a deck cleaner, then stain stripper and then I sanded, a lot. I applied the stain with a stain pad, and decided it wasn't the best way. I took a small stain brush and worked 2 boards at a time. Waited 24 hours. Lightly sanded with 240 grit and shop vac'd. Added the second coat with a large deck stain brush and it made a world of a difference. I waited 3 days before I stepped on it. Use a deck stain brush, do the proper prep, and apply this in the shade or else you'll get bubbles.

Customer Care

I used Cabot Gold Moonlit Mahogany on my screened in porch. The floor is made of PT 2 x 6 T&G boards. The previous finish was a solid stain that was peeling and flaking. I used a drum sander with two different grits to strip and prep the floor. I applied the stain with a 6" stain brush applying to two boards at a time. I applied the second coat the following day after a light sanding with 220 sand paper and cleaning with shop vac.

The stain went on smoothly and was easy to work with. The color darkened and the sheen was more uniform with the second coat. I am very happy with the appearance and feel of the finish.

I would caution using this product on older damaged wood or using if you are not going to sand the floor and do the proper prep, I think the outcome may be disappointing, however if you are willing to do the proper prep it's a great product.

Indoor look outside

So I took the deck to bare wood from a previous Olympia stain that was water based and extremely challenging to get on smooth without break lines. I have utilized Cabot products for nearly 20 years and really liked the look of the gold product line. 
The product went on smooth but slow. You absolutely must brush it on and take your time. That is the only draw back. Work steady and patiently. My recommendation is to put it on like you want it to look, take your time. I like to use older paint brushes that I can just toss when complete. Keep a rag or two nearby to wipe any excess but overall I didn't need to wipe a lot of excess off like you need with some products, just near knots or by the edges occasionally. 
We live in the humidity of southeast VA and I allowed the product to dry for the entire 7 days before I put the second coat on. Coat 1 looked as described, nice but slightly uneven and not uniform. Still looked good though. Coat 2 went on and the utilization was as indicated on the back of the can as well. As an example, if the area you are staining took 1 can from bare wood for the first coat, the second coat would take you about 1/3 to 1/2 of a can for coat 2. About as advertised. The second coat goes on significantly easier and faster than the coat but you still need to work deliberately. I found no problems with stop lines And ensuring a smooth 
application as I often do with water based stain... lots of forgiveness with this even with drips, just don't leave for hours...
Time will tell but so far so good. You won't get away with everything but overall I found this product extremely good and as advertised, rare in the stain world. Follow the directions and put the work in and you will be rewarded. One of the best products I have used. Highly recommended.. watch the heat, better than a water based product but you still don't want to put it on in direct hot sun. Allow adequately time to dry between coats.

This product has been tip top

After much debate and many samples, I finally selected Cabot Gold - "Sun- Drenched Oak" #3470, as the stain for my rather large cedar wrap-around porch (~600 sq. ft.).  The Cabot vendors could not tell me much about the product performance, because it is very new product to the Cabot lineup.  Even the Cabot “call” center was unclear on drying time and second coat application time.

I prepared the surface by using a "remover", then "brightener",  power washing in between applications, and allowing 3 days of drying before staining porch. I utilized a 4" quality stain brush and found the product applied very nicely with good coverage and penetration.  First coat allowed to dry 80 hours (still slightly tacky) due to weather conditions.  At >72 hours there was torrential rain which created water puddles on the porch.  When sweeping off the water, that had been standing 6 hours, I noticed slight graying where the water stood (see pictures)...which was cause for great concern.  Upon complete drying the spots seemed to disappear.  Second coat was easily applied and did setup with more depth to color and much more sheen then first coat. Grain and knots of wood shows though very well.  However, after >72 hours rain water again seems to show slight graying which blends in after totally drying.  Once again, standing water stains are a concern, yet I will give it a full 7 days of drying before I make final judgement.

I am very happy with the rich "honey" color, yet reserved regarding water spotting and overall sheen unevenness of the total application.  The Cabot Gold stain seems above average for coverage at a fairly high end price.  The real test comes with time and exposure to the elements.  I trust that this product will provide nice coverage for a couple of years…we'll see.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Stained our deck last year and it was beautiful but when the sun hit it it was brutally hot to walk on.  Our dogs could not walk on it as well.

When I applied my second coat the deck was extremely cloudy when I got up in the morning. I waited a week for the sun to clear it up which it never did. Now I have to strip it down and start over. I have never had a problem with Cabot stain before, but this stuff  is not user friendly.

Cloudiness won't go away
