Let me preface this by saying that I have only tried this lens, several times, but I don't own it. I eventually went with a wider lens that gets about the same range on a crop sensor. I can tell you, however, that it is great.

It isn't noted in the description, but this is an L class lens, and as such is superior in every aspect on its design. The pictures are super sharp, the color reproduction is beautiful, and with the f/2.8 aperture it is very fast. It's a bit shy of the traditional portrait lengths (80-135), but on any of the non professional canon DSLRs its crop factor extends it into a good portait lens, too. The bokeh (out of focus background circles) is smooth and creamy. A delight to behold.

It is often used as the main lens for wedding photographers. It is wide enough fro group shots,while being a good length for formals

This lens is often called the Tank or sometimes the brick. It is one of canon's heavier lenses. About twice the weight of your average camera body. Its weight makes it harder to carry everywhere, but its focal length makes you want to. It is a great walk around lens for taking everyday pictures. On a film or full frame body it is a thing of beauty. On a crop frame it's not wide enough, but still a serviceable walkaround lens.
