My 10 year old was able to complete these programs without any help.  It gives them an introduction to programming in an fun way.  I also went through the book.  As a mom who does not know much about coding I thought it was fun as well.  The main draw was the program was free.  Overall I was impressed with how user friendly this book was.  These was some interesting facts but for an impatient child can also be used just to get a program to work without the extra reading.
