Ease Of Use

Offers products at a relatively low cost.

I tested this as soon as I got it and it works very well. I will always have it with me while in the great outdoors.

Must have product for emergency.

walmart.com

This is great for camping out I keep it on my back pack Incase I forget matches, which has happened. Takes a few times to catch on how to use but works great.

Great

This pruduct is great. Remember that in the outdoors; preparation is essential. I used this pruduct many times with great results. If you take your time and get your materials together before you strike the flint;and with enough mag shavens you'll have fire every time. Don't be stingy with the magnesium cause you've plenty. Also it helps to put the shavens in like say cotton ball or other fibrous material to keep the magnesium shavens from scattering in the wind etc. A little tea tree oil on the cotton ball or other material helps with keeping fire going until larger stuff catches . Tea tree oil also good for antiseptic.

Easy and reliable

I'd never used one of these before, so the first couple dozen times I played with it, I couldn't get it to work very well and thought it was junk. I keep experimenting, though, and figured it out. Now I can strike it and get tons of sparks every time. I've used it hundreds of times and there's still hundreds of uses left. Very useful tool that is very inexpensive.

Very Good

I've owned one for at least 2 years. I've used it many times, it's worked great each and every time. It goes a long way, and has yet to fail me. If you camp, hike, or just need to start a fire in a firepit, this works well. I've used it for the firepit and for starting campfires in all kinds of terrain (marshland, swamp, mountains). It worked so well, I bought a few extras.

Necessary equipment

I'm buying this as a replacement for my old one which is worn out after years of owning it. After you learn how to use this, it's fun just to impress other people. These starters are always reliable even when it's damp after a rain, and you can't find completly dry tinder. I believe every survival kit needs one of these!

Every camper needs one!

I bought this at my local Wal-Mart and tried it out immediately. At first I had trouble getting the sparks to catch the magnesium but after a few tries I actually got the magnesium to burn. I didn't have any kindling around the first time so I tried it again later with a small pile of dried leaves. Had no problem getting them to light. This was in 12 degree weather so the flames were a welcome sight! I have tried it twice and from the block of magnesium I have left I would say I have 1,000 fires left. So lets see...
Approximately $7 for the product divided by 1,000 fires =0.007 cents to start a fire. Even if I'm way off and I only start 100 fires with this its still 7 cents per fire and if you REALLY need a fire I think it is well worth 7 cents. Great product for a great price. I would recommend this to anyone.

Great product for a great price

I've have a few of these fire starters, and I plan on owning more in time. They are the best in a survival situation. However, it isn't the easiest thing to learn. It takes practice, and then becomes simple and easy to use.

Those who have trouble with this product are probably using a large blade or knife. These work best with very thin and sharp blades. Like that of a utility knife, or razor blade pocket knife.

It does take a fair amount of magnesium to actually start the fire, but with such a large ratio of mag-to-flint, it's constructed with that in mind.

Also, you need good tender. Always pack something that will burn, and burn long in a waterproof container. Such as a zip-loc bag. I carry waxed sawdust that I make at home, but Wal-Mart sells a similar product in the camping section, but due to its chemical compound, it's not exactly green. In a survival situation, I couldn't see that mattering anyway.

If you camp, hike, trek, or do anything outdoors... This is a must. Just know and learn it before you head out next weekend.

Get To Know It, Then Use It

I've had one of these things for a couple of years and even in wet/damp conditions, yes this thing will start a fire.

I rated it a bit lower in the meets expectations category because when I first got the thing, it took me a little practice to actually be able to use it. The time to learn is NOT when you need it!

It Really Works

2-3 times a month, I put myself into the woods to hone my survival skills. I'm a backpacker and learning how to survive without practice is a huge mistake. My gear is always light, and I never total more than 20lbs of weight for any extended trip, so weight is crucial. With that said, I've been looking for my backup fire starting tool, which the magnesium block was in tryouts! I found that magnesium piles are hard to contain in an outdoor setting unlike when you practice at home. Also, shaving the block takes a lot of effort. The spark strip isn't very efficient and wears down rather quickly. While on my trip, I found it much easier to just use the spark strip. I didn't mess with the magnesium. It is important in a survival situation to conserve energy. Although this isn't a very primitive method, there are many other ways to start fire without as much work.

Pick the best tools for the job.
