Creed: Mark Tremonti (vocals, guitar); Scott Stapp (vocals); Brian Marshall (bass); Scott Phillips (drums).<br />"With Arms Wide Open" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song and was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.<br />Creed's second album continues in the vein of MY OWN PRISON, combining heavy guitar rock with lyrics that aspire to something beyond standard rock & roll hedonism. There's plenty of head-banging riffs for lead singer Scott Stapp's Vedder-esque wail to ride over (although the band is surprising nimble considering how heavy it plays) and this time out there's also some softer stuff --"Say I," "Wrong Way"--with more than a hint of Led Zeppelin in its Middle-Eastern experimental mode. Even more surprising, there's actually a ballad here--"With Arms Wide Open"--with a wistfully beautiful melody.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Back in the Y2K days, well by now we know all about them but the one overshadowed thing going on was what became known as the Jesus Freaks. Creed was categorized as grunge due to following the sound of most 90s bands that fell into that category, being late 90s they were also termed nu-metal but that was classic Napster era mislabeling. Many of their lyrics followed a Christian sentiment hence why they were deemed Christian rock alongside nu-metal Christian band P.O.D., Jars of Clay and others who were emerging in that scene including Skillet but the second wave of Christian mainstream music happened in the 2010s. Either way, Creed was listened to by people into the nu-metal scene with all its angst, anger, misfit behavior and indulgence in worldly pleasures including the darker stuff, Creed brought just as much emotional strife and angst into their music but with strong Christian messages kicking teen pop, rap, rave and hip-hop also making waves at the time to the curb. Electronic music was in its rockabilly/classic rock stage at the time being it had a sizeable fanbase but not a whole generation into it, it still didn't reach people the way Creed did in their time. The overall message of Human Clay is that from our dawn we were all human clay before we were humanity, a timeless Christian message.
