I am not a professional drywaller, but I have done hundreds of liner feet of drywalling. 
I have done the sanding manually before this and I became tired of it so I thought to try this tool. I think as I get used to it, I will have wished I bought one a long time ago.
It takes some getting used to as it can really remove alot of material quickly, however, I was also surprised by how quickly I progressed with it one the first use. If you are gentle and can get the "feel" of how the sandpaper is cutting, it will do a nice job right away. Feeling the float of the pad is essential becuase it will want to dig hard on one edge if you twist the handle. 
Over all, I am pleased with the unit, I did not opt to buy the dewalt dust collecter becuase that would have set me back just as much as this tool cost and instead opted for the duct tape adapter which is working fine. 
For the cost I also wish that Dewalt would have included the optional hard backing for the sander. I see why they went with the soft back as it will be less likely to gouge as you get used to the machine, but why not throw both in the package. 
I also think I will find some other uses for this machine as they sell standard sand paper in the 9 inch format such as large wodden surfaces like fence or deck. I will try that in time.

Sanding in the taping trade is the worst part of the job.! Not anymore !! If you were to compare a wooden wheel to a rubber tire that's how much of a big deal this is. Thanks dewalt you have changed my life.

love the ability to slap a battery and plug in the battery dust extractor and go to work. 9 inch hook and loop sanding discs and you will be on the way. Can also drop the hook and loop head and run a screw on head i.e exmp porta cable pads. like the ability to easily extend the boom or retract it, was pleasantly surprised with the sanding power it actually has, especillay compared to plug in sanders. works great for alternative sanding jobs too. wont go wrong on it.

Whats Not to like

the unit is slightly heavier than the competing plug-in sander units. the motor spins strong enough while the battery is fresh. a brand new fully charged 5.0 battery lasts almost 20 minutes and then it runs weakly for 2~3 more minutes. the sander can use 8 or 9 inch discs which is nice. the proprietary vacuum hose is annoying, you should offer a fitting so that it connects to ordinary shop vacuums. the foam/velcro sanding disc should have holes/ports to allow the vacuum to remove the loads of dust that collect at the center of the sanding pads. 
- no vacuum attachment
- no center disc vacuum holes
- shortish run time

I have been using this tool for a year now. For the most part it works well. Have to go back with a sanding sponge to fine tune some areas. It would be a lot easier to see the surface if the head had LED lights. I used a sander with lights and its a lot easier to see the flaws as your sanding instead of setting the sander down and shining a light across the surface the going back to sand where necessary. Please put lights on it!!

I wanted this tool to work well but was not satisfied. I am a Milwaukee guy but after buying the Dewalt Drywall screw gun and comparing it to my Milwaukee I was blown away. I figured that the sander would be just as impressive. I was mistaken. As others have said there is no dust extraction. First I had to use tape to hold the thing onto my dust extractor because I had no idea that there was a proprietary Dewalt dust extraction system. Then it had no suction anyway. The foam pad blocks the air and it can only suck around the edges. I was covered in dust in less than two seconds. Second the variable speed is still way too fast this thing ate through all the mud in no time. I was shocked at how fast it took away mud and poured it in My face. I tried it a couple times and just gave up it is too much of a hassle to Mess with. It caused more problems than it solved.

Disappointed

i want to start by saying I'm kinda of a dewalt guy.  This is the first tool I've purchased from the company i was disappointed in. Watching reviews the dust management seemed to work as well if not better then other drywall sanders on the market.  However this tool does NOT ship with the same parts as it was reviewed with.  In the reviews it uses a hard pad to mount the sandpaper or mesh to, the hard pad is covered in holes for the dust to be sucked through.  As shipped with the soft foam pad dust management is crippled.  if your not going to use a dust extractor, maybe it doesn't matter to you, but dust mangment doesn't work in the state it is shipped. To top it off the part numbers they give for the hard pad doesn't come up anywhere     DWE7802  ?   Why Dewalt?

Switched to the battery sander after having corded sanders for years. walking on stilts and not having to worry about a cord is a bonus, the downside is sanding a giant house alone on a Friday and your sander decides to completely seize up which leads to a long day

Get this tool for a home project. Saw it had ok reviews but it's not living up to the reviews. First the foam Velcro pad keeps getting suctioned to the wall and pops off. To put the foam back on it takes an act of congress. There's no locking mechanism to stop the washer and bolt from spinning, and the bold is on there super tight. I think it's gets tighter with work. My engineer brother also thought the design is messed up. He said that it probably wasn't possible with the restriction the design team had. There's more problems too. To power the machine done I almost need a hammer to smash the off switch back in.  Which makes it had to turn off. Next when trying to sand the ceiling there's no way to ensure the sander lands even on the ceiling so when you try to and the ceiling you can put some gouges if you aren't paying attention. I wish I read more reviews of other brands before I bought this one. I doubt makita's 18v Sheetrock sander has the same issues. 
It's possible a pro would not have these problems because they know how to fix them.
