It has a slick surface like the others wrote, but my 9 year old daughter whom I got it for discovered you can peel it off and there's more of a chalk board type surface underneath, still not a very good chalk board for the price.

no it is totally useless.I can not write anything on the board as it does not show any thing .I wonder if any one from wal-mart can try to use or check  the quality before selling the item on intenet ?I am throwing it in trash . lost money and disappointment .

customers stay away from this product

I like the size for my 3 year old niece but I have to admit I didn't like the chalk board it's self ....It's not like the regular chalkboards, it's more for dry erase markers. I wasn't pleased with it!! By my time I seen the actual chalkboard she already wrote on it with a dry eraser so with that being said, please go back to the original chalkboard. Also, you can put one of two pieces of chalk in there( just suggesting)

This is not even a chalkboard you cant write on it with chalk. Extremely disappointed. if only I had seen these other reviews before I purchased 2 9f them.

Not a chalkboard

Can't write on it with standard chalk. Wondering if the chalk markers might work,  but it didn't say anything on the packaging to suggest this. What kind of chalkboard has a shiny finish? Going to try to return it and hopefully get my money back.

The slate is not even chalkboard material, more like a dry erase board.
