I've been a fan of Dani Pettrey's work since her first book years ago.  They sit proudly on my shelves.  This one is no exception to her action-packed suspense.  The Coastal Guardians is a great series and I love it. 

Join this amazing team as they try to stop a madman with a stolen weapon that could cause tremendous destruction if they don't catch him first.  There is a mass shooting that devastates the team, but it's only the beginning of the havoc that falls in the wake of this diabolical maniac.  

Pettrey deftly adds layers all along that serve to constantly bring more intrigue to the reader.  The personal stories of those involved are great to watch as well.  They struggle with real problems just like the rest of us, and they've allowed God into their lives and have His help with those problems.  We also get a great secondary story as well as see old friends making an appearance.  Very well  done!

Wow! Talk about twists and turns and edge of your seat suspense! There's kidnapping, a toxic chemical dump found in the sound, a paramilitary encampment invasion, car chases, some light romance sprinkled throughout, and lots of teamwork to figure out whodunnit. I read this as an ARC ebook copy and couldn't put it down! It's a fast moving read that starts out with a mass killing during a Coast Guard Medic graduation. When the dust settles many are wounded, several are dead and many are scared and horrified at what took place. Among the dead are 3 Coast Guard instructors, a few of the mercenary invaders, a few guests of the graduates. One of the graduates had just received her certificate as she was suddenly shot. Her name was Molly and she held a special place in Brooke's heart. Molly worked with Brooke learning the ropes as a Coast Guard Medic. Among the injured was one of the mercenaries. While Brooke was helping Molly and helping triage the wounded she was told to get on the Medivac transporting the wounded mercenary. She didn't want to go with him, she wanted to go with her friend Molly instead, but, orders were orders so she boarded with the mercenary. The next day as she was leaving the hospital she was abducted. Eventually she was able to escape her captors and get help. Because she was able to see the face of one of her captors she was pursued for most of the story and kidnapped again.

Mass Shooting, Kidnapping, Graduation Interrupted

I don't even know where to begin. This story was the perfect combination of suspense and romance. Dani Pettrey is one of my favorite authors and she knocked this one out of the park. The plot had me flipping the pages into the wee hours of the morning and I was sad to see it end but what an ending it was. Five stars and I will be recommended it to all my friends.

Couldn't put it down

I struggle with reviews because I don't want to give anything away, but want you to know how much I LOVED this book! The series is phenomenal, and Dani has outdone herself again with this third book in the series! She is one of a handful of authors that I would buy their book just because it has her name on it. No reviews. No synopsis. 
The Deadly Shallows is chalk full of suspense, excitement, romance, and a whodunit that will have you staying up way too late! I could not turn the pages fast enough to get to the end! Do yourself a favor and read this series!

HIGHLY Recommend

The Deadly Shallows has two mysteries the team must solve and focuses on Noah Rowley and Brooke Kessler and Caleb Eason and Austin Kelly. There's a lot more romance in this installment than in the previous books, but since I'm a romance lover I liked it. I enjoyed the twists and turns as the team worked to solve the crimes. The bad guys are bad and I wanted them to pay for what they'd done. Pettrey does a really good job in creating a believable story with just the right mix of criminal details. I like that the women are strong and capable and both the male and female characters need rescuing at times. There's a lot of action and because of the detail, you'll think you're right there sifting through the clues with the team. I'm a fan of faith threads in stories and there's a solid one in this book, but it isn't preachy. Everything gets resolved in the end, and while I would recommend reading the books in order, you will not be lost if you read this one first. I received an ARC from Netgalley but I have ordered the paperback.

Action, Suspense and Romance

The Deadly Shallows by Dani Pettrey is the third book in her Coastal Guardians series. Coast Guard flight medic Brooke Kesler transports the only surviving gunman from the mass shooting at the Coast Guard base. What he whispers to her puts her life in jeopardy.  CGIS Agent Noah Rowley will do his best to protect Brooke, but is his best enough? This was a very fast-paced, action-packed thrill ride. You never knew where the bad guys were going to show up next. It kept you guessing and turning the pages.

Great Suspense

CGIS Agent and team leader Noah Rowley is tasked with figuring out who and why is behind the mass shooting on the Coast Guard base. When Coast Guard flight Medic Brooke Kesler finds herself in the enemy's crosshairs she is befuddled. She was simply doing her job and stepping in where needed, taking the only surviving gunman for desperately needed medical attention, who knew his desperate whisper would put a target on her back?
Noah teams up with Brooke to try to figure out what they're missing. His investigative team jumps in to assist in each of their areas of expertise. They work tirelessly even as they're continually called on to review more and more evidence and follow more and more clues.
Book 3 of the Coastal Guardians series, The Deadly Shallows, is my favorite of the series so far. I enjoyed how Pettrey navigated this story while simultaneously pulling in another one. I like how the team interacts and their continual dependence on God to help them navigate the day to day. I like these characters. Their personalities, insecurites, and determination to get to the bottom of whatever is going on is always intriguing. It takes a very talented author to pull off so many idiosyncrasies without dropping the ball on anyone. Pettrey does an excellent job, again! I'm anxious for Logan and Emy's story ... I'm sure it will prove to be dynamic!
There were a few things that didn't follow but all in all they get lost in the big picture of the drama and mystery so they weren't too important.

Book 3

It was great re-connecting with the team in this third book in the Coastal Guardian series. 
As usual, Ms Pettrey starts out with a highly toxic situation when a mass shooting disrupts a graduation on base. It only ramps up from there. It was non-stop action with the team going in several directions at once and wondering if all the clues were connected in some way. 
This time there are two couples that we follow on their romantic journey: Austin, head of her own detective agency and Caleb, a CGIS agent. Their banter was classic and fun. And Noah, a leader at CGIS and Brooke a Coastguard flight medic. These tense situations bring out the hero in Noah but he has some issues to work through before he can declare himself to Brooke. 
I like that there is a large group who are connected by faith and friendship and that they are almost like family.
A suspenseful follow up to the first two books and makes me want to go back and reread them. Ms. Pettrey is a master at Romantic Suspense. I look forward to her next book.

CGIS Suspense

This is the third and final book in the Coastal Guardians Series, and although it can be read alone, they are all equally great! We are given some cameo's with past characters, and how this all fits together.

Yes, this is a page turner, and for me a very fast read, as I needed answers. It begins with a mass shooting, and we are looking for answers!

As with everyday life there is more than one story here, and you will quickly be holding your breath, and your heart will be in your throat, will these people you now care about survive, it is questionable!

Along with some great suspense we do have some really sweet romance, and when the final page was turned, I really wanted to stay and continue in their lives!

Suspense

While probably not my favorite Coastal Guardians book, The Deadly Shallows was still a strong addition to the series. Dani Pettrey's trademark chilling edge-of-your-seat romantic suspense was as fast-paced as ever and her skill with the romantic suspense genre is never in doubt. 

The Deadly Shallows was one of those stories that had so many twists and turns and different threads tentacaling outward that every time I thought the case might be coming to a close...it wasn't. How author Dani Pettrey kept it all straight in her head while writing the this third Coastal Guardians book I have no clue but she did a great job keeping guessing and glued to the page.

The unfortunate choice in stereotyping one particular political group made me a little uncomfortable, but, on the other hand the backgrounds and motivations of the villains were so well crafted into a layered multi-faceted mystery that I couldn't help but still like the story. 

I've really been enjoying the Coastal Guardians series as it has stepped away from the usual FBI and U.S. Marshals etc. investigative realm and into that of the U.S. Coast Guard. It's been a fun switch as was the flight medic position of one of the main characters in The Deadly Shallows. 

If you are looking for a good romantic suspense series from a very talented author you should definitely check out The Deadly Shallows and the rest of its Coastal Guardians predecessors. And, like me, I'm sure you will be eagerly anticipating the next book from Dani Pettrey...
