When I read that 3 different maples can be used to make syrup, I decided to use the sap of some of the red maples in my woods.  This kit was inexpensive so I decided to try it.  I used a battery powered drill to drill the holes, tapped in the tubes and ran the hose into a gallon water jug.  I drilled a hole in the cap of the jug so it was relatively sealed off from rain or other impurities.   I tapped the trees in mid February and so far have collected 3 gallons of sap.  Ten gallons will yield a quart of syrup.  I will boil the sap on an outdoor gas grill and finish it off on the stove in my house.   The only thing I  would have liked was information on how to drill the holes but that was easily found on the internet.
