Colors

These pencils are bright and vibrant, and has a great selection of colors. The only color I'm missing is a true red. The pigmentation is as expected from Derwent and goes on super smooth, and they're easy to blend. I like the tin storage container which makes storage easy. It is also very easy to find the color you are searching for as they are colored at the end with the color printed on the pencil itself as well.

Hi, Which model is a completely professional colored pencil for fine arts? Is this a new Chromaflow product? A completely professional model, not a school or university model.

A Semi Layman's Review of a Professional Set of Colored Art Pencils

Experience:
While I have noted in the title that I consider myself to be a "semi-Layman on the subject of colored  art pencils I will be more specific:

While I have been a professional Graphics Artist for many years (decades even), I am strictly digital, that being said, I understand the relevance of certain features of handwriting & drawing instruments, as well as all facets of style, color, techniques, etc.,  I just simply have the drawing ability of a 5-year-old by hand 😊, on the plus side I have been a publisher since the '90s and have had the privilege of working with many talented artists along the way.

Packaging:
The first impression of the "DERWENT CHROMAFLOW PENCILS" is that of Quality & Taste, The case is made of durable metal and is adorned with nice graphics and coloring, the marketing is subtle, and the product is allowed to sell itself.

Inside the case the pencil holder is designed for ease of use, cradling each pencil in two places and leaving enough room at each end to be able to tip up the desired pencil for easy access by simply pressing down on the tip or the butt to raise it for easy grasping, a simple yet thoughtful touch.

Appearance & Feel (Pencils): 
First of all, I love Black & Gold as long as it is done right.
The appearance of the "DERWENT CHROMAFLOW PENCILS" is certainly one of Class, Not just the Classic Black and Gold look, but each pencil shows its color at each end, and the color of the butt matches the actual pencil color almost spot on. In addition, each pencil has an assigned name & number, and while I agree with most of the names, I do think that a few do not match the name once they are on paper (common printing paper)  eg: "blush pink"

As for the feel, They are smooth and round and have a decent grip, about the same weight, diameter, length (and smell)  of a lighter weight number 2 pencil

Use & Test:
So, for the review of the "DERWENT CHROMAFLOW PENCILS", I wanted to do some basic tests to assess feel and function, (the results can be seen in the included photographs).

Note: All tests were performed on:
Boise, Polaris, Multi-Purpose Printing paper, 
Brightness = 97, Weight = 24lb, size 8 1/5 x 11

Test 1:
For the first test of the "DERWENT CHROMAFLOW PENCILS",  I started out pressing the pencil as hard as needed (plus 10%) to achieve the darkest color reasonably possible, (and check its strength) and then proceeded to gradually lift pressure to achieve the lightest color reasonably possible, this was repeated for each pencil and done in numerical order, (ascending) All Colors were good representatives of the color portrayed by the tips and butts of the pencils, This test can be seen in the first to rows, The colors for each number is noted below:

Test 2:
For the second test of the "DERWENT CHROMAFLOW PENCILS",  I wanted to test the "Blendable" feature noted on the cover of the box, now this is where the layman part comes in, because to me "Blendable", is literal, meaning that if I use red with blue or blue with red I should get some shade(s) of purple and that yellow and green make blue etc., so I tried just that on row 3 (in the photo) and to that end, I failed to produce anything that looked "Blendable" to me, perhaps there is a method I don't know, I even thought of melting them some (they are wax-based) and trying that, but for now I cannot say that you can mix colors, if someone knows what "Blendable" REALLY means please correct me if I am wrong.

Test 3:
For the third test of the "DERWENT CHROMAFLOW PENCILS",  I wanted to test the effect of different surfaces on the pencils, so I placed the piece of paper on different materials to do just that, I found it interesting that the smoothest flow came from the denim (actually, a denim-like padded eyeglass case) perhaps the soft denim allowed the color to fill more or maybe it was the padding, I was rooting for the tin case myself. 

Test 4:
For the fourth and final test of the "DERWENT CHROMAFLOW PENCILS",  I simply used my outstanding drawing skills to make strings of figure 8's, the purpose here was to further assess the feel of each pencil as well as observe its continuity and flow with slight variations in pressure as well as to see if there were noticeable differences in line with and color when using in varied directions (if you look hard you can see the white lol), you can see the results for yourself, there are no noticeable flaws and they all felt not only the same but as smooth as can be expected.

Bonus Test:
At the end of testing the "DERWENT CHROMAFLOW PENCILS", I decided to see how hard I would have to press to break a Tip… I can say this, 'you will tear your paper first' LOL, but like a trooper I kept pressing until it broke, the break was small & clean and it sharpened well, I can honestly say these pencils and their cores have a very respectable strength.

Conclusion & Rating:
When rating on a 5-point scale I start at 2.5 and go up and down from there.
I give this 4.5/5 stars because: 
The packaging and marketing are attractive and well designed, not over-hyped, and has an overall appearance of quality & class, making it a great choice as a gift.

The pencils themselves look, feel, and perform excellently & provide a level of confidence & precision when using them.

The case is attractive & durable, as well as functional, providing easy access and a snug fit for the pencils.

As for performance, I feel that the most important marketing for any product is on its packaging, particularly on the front/cover, that being said I rated those claims as follows

Overall, the "DERWENT CHROMAFLOW PENCILS", Have a professional, look, feel & Durability that I think any artist would be pleased to have, and that I would be more than happy to buy as a gift for any aspiring or professional artist.

As for the blending that would be the only area that I docked it and would be more than happy to change my rating from 4.5 to 5 stars if someone could explain what "blendable" means, but even then they are marketing this to all levels of artists.
Honestly, I think the word needs description, or, choose a better word, as I doubt, that I am the only one that would feel disappointed that you can't blend the colors.

All in all the "DERWENT CHROMAFLOW PENCILS", set (12) Is a premium product, and in the $20 range, I feel that they are a great value.

I would highly recommend the "DERWENT CHROMAFLOW PENCILS",  to anyone interested in drawing from budding artists to old (or young) pros.

A  Semi Layman's  Review of Professional Pencils

These are about $80 in America and aren't as good as Prismacolor which are about $30 less. They don't blend as well, the pigments aren't as vibrant and there just aren't many colors.

Not worth the price.
