I bought this and the 20V drywall sander because I'm building an addition on my house and knew I'd have a ton of drywall sanding to do. I've only used the sander with this dust extractor twice so far, but it does a fantastic job. I'd say it captures 95% of the dust for what I've used it for so far.

I was confused as to the differences between a dust extractor and a wet/dry vac. (i.e. can a dust extractor be used as a wet/dry vac.) I also was tired of spending a significant amount of time cleaning up dust after a project. So I took a chance and ordered this unit. I live in a condo and don't have the luxury of a dedicated indoor workshop with plumbed dust extraction. The Dewalt 8 gal dust extractor is an extremely well build dust extractor that can also be used as an all around "shop vac". The best part about a dust extractor is that is puts out clean air via it HEPA filtration. The dewalt units are great because they connect to virtually every Dewalt tool with a locking twist of the hose end. You can also solidly attach conventional vacuum attachments to the hose. Finally, the bags on these units are very robust. They attached very securely to the unit and from what I can tell keep the unit insides clean. The auto thumping feature hopefully prevents from having to clean the filters! Only down side to the unit is that it pulls some noteworthy amperage so, you cannot connect a miter or table saw to the same circuit unless you have a heavy load circuit. This unit does have the ability to turn on automatically when you power on your supported tool. This feature is great for sanding and especially power planing.

Buy this over a standard wet dry vac

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Purchased this with a DWE46125 Dust shroud and DWE4011 grinder. As a remodeler we constantly have to cut into plaster and drywall. The dust issue is obvious. Had tried another brands dust shroud but we could never solve the vacuum hose issues. Constantly either duct taping the hose connections together or using 2 miles of adapters to make the different hoses connect. I went all in with dust collecotor and grinder all dewalt. The system works perfectly. (For info on the grinder and vacumn see other reviews.)
Also own a 10 gallon, but I find myself using this one more as it is lighter and easier to carry around. The hose does wrap up on top as well as the cord. 
Pros - The vacumn has amazing suction. The thumper really does clean the filters, comes with a fleece bag. Hose has a good length and finally the main reason I purchased was that it locks into my other dewalt tools. ie; table saw, miter saw any tool with dust collection.
Cons-Hose marks up everything, I bring in a drop cloth when using it for finish work and do not use it as a shop vac when on site.

Lightwieght easy to carry

I purchased this dust extractor to pair with other DeWalt tools as part of my business strategy, to be a livable remodeler and RRP compliant. The connection to the tools make this so much easier to use. solid connection that stay connected, This tool has been well received.

It is a really great tool. It sucks amazingly. It blows the filters clean of dust. Does not lose suction while doing it.
It is really great how the hose locks into most of my dealt tools that can use suction. A must have is the accessory kit sold separately a very good buy as well. I am very happy.

Great vac.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My buddy let me borrow his and it was awesome. I am getting ready to buy my own since I am in the market for an auto filter cleaning extractor. Can't wait to hook it up to all my other Dewalt tools and finally have a matching vac. Good tool Dewalt

Great vac and quiet

I love this vacuum. Good suction, the thumper keeps the filters clean much longer than vac's without it, the hose is a good length. It's a small size and manageable in residential houses but not too small that it doesn't have decent holding capacity.

The thing that irks me the most is the hose. The hose marks up EVERYTHING. I'm a finish carpenter and remodeler. I can't bring this vacuum anywhere without expecting to have to hunt for black marks after I clear out. White trim, unfinished floors, vanities, tubs, toilets, ANYTHING. It leaves black marks on it. So annoying. And it really makes a bad impression with customers. 

Also, no attachments come with? Kinda weak for the price of it, if you ask me. Also wish there were an attachment holder of some sort. 

Overall I still love this vac. Good features and good performance. Some fine tuning still needed.

The good & the bad

I  bought this vac for work I'm doing in a hotel , I ordered it from a drywall company along with the port a cable sander , my complaint is the switch for the tool stopped working probably the 2nd or 3rd week I had it , so it would turn on or off when I turn on the tool , then it started again and then off again now it's not working , I could take it in or back do to the amount of work and time I have to do this so I felt with having to turn it on and off as I go , but it's really bothering me because I'm on stilts all day . Other that that I love this vac and can wait to use it on other things especially with my wood working jobs , so any info would be appreciated.

Only one complaint

I have had this vacuum for 4 and a half months and feel I can sufficiently rate the tool.
The good stuff:
I love the length of hose on this thing
The wheels roll great and have a wide enough base that it doesn't tip when you are using it fully extended.
It came a with a fleece bag and two hepa filters
It's fairly light
Of course the tool power on/off feature
The not so good stuff:
There is negligible hose management. It is a stretchy band on a clip that holds the extra long hose in a bundle on one side of the vacuum.
It is an 8 gallon vacuum - they only sell 12 gallon bags to go in it. Such a waste of room in the vacuum body the bag never fills more than 20 - 30% (With the hepa filters in place.)
In four months it has around 10-15 hours on it and less than two using the tool switch. As of today the tool powered on off switch no longer functions. The vacuum simply stays on when powered on regardless of a tool being used or not.
Overall The only thing that would make me buy it again is that it is cheaper than others.

I have had this vacuum for 4 and a half months

Motor blew after a year. I own 10s of thousands worth of dewalt tools. Overall happy with pretty mush all of them
 Not sure if I got a lemon or they are all this poorly made but mine smelled like it was burning. Checked hose for clogs and filters. No issue there. Ran it for a few more minutes and it burnt out. For thus price I was hoping for a high quality machine.
