Just a heads up that this is book three in this series, and it can be read alone, the thing that ties these reads together, Chicago.

This is Olive Pierce's story, and I love that girl, she has such a big heart, and goes beyond to help those she loves and cares about.

Olive and her best friend Claire are on the SS Eastland, when disaster strikes, and according to the author's notes, more died here than on the Titanic, if you don't count the crew, and to be truthful I never heard of it.

This is a Christian read, and this girl wears her faith on her sleeve, she does risk everything to bring justice and closure.

This is a book that will grab you and never let go, there is so much going on, and you will never see it coming!

I literally paused in the middle of this story and just appreciated the talent of author Jocelyn Green and how reading this story was such a pleasure. Her superb writing, her amazing can't-put-it-down storytelling, and her impeccable research all combined to make this a perfect example of fantastic historical fiction. Drawn By The Current has many, many layers that reveal a beautiful depth and emotion in this intriguing story.

Not too far into Drawn by the Current I flipped to the back to read the Author's Note. I wanted to understand to what degree the main historical event was based on fact. Discovering the truth of what took place on July 24, 1915 ramped up the emotional factor of an already emotionally charged story. It is shocking that this event from our country's history has been largely forgotten. 

Author Jocelyn Green is a master storyteller. Research has shown that readers as a group  have a greater degree of empathy than non-readers. It is within the tales of writers such as Jocelyn Green that that deeper empathy is developed. She creates characters that readers care about, and draws readers into the depths of emotion her characters experience. 

I highly recommend Green's Windy City Saga series, of which Drawn by the Current is book three. The books can be enjoyed as stand-alone reads, but I am glad to have read them in order, getting to know the characters and their back stories. I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of this most recent release from Bethany House by NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Outstanding

I have enjoyed all of the Windy City Saga books and learned so much about the history of Chicago!  I do not recall even knowing about the SS Eastland capsizing and 844 people perished!  The protagonist, Olive Pierce, and her close friend were onboard the ship and barely escaped but managed to save two young children!  I admired Olive's determination to find the body of the children's mother when it appears she perished but her body hasn't been found.  Olive feels the young woman's family needs the closure of finding a body. Olive's friend, Claire, uses the accident as an opportunity to disappear and escape an abusive marriage which puts Olive in danger.   Olive seeks a promotion at her job with MetLife but her boss doesn't feel women are capable of anything but clerical work and someone is changing reports she has written!  I recommend Drawn by the Current to anyone who enjoys fiction set in the early 1900s.

The SS Eastland Capsizes

This is a story of best friends, Olive and Claire, who intend to celebrate Claire's birthday at Western Electric's annual picnic, starting with an excursion on the SS Eastland and ending in tragedy. Olive is an insurance agent at MetLife, aspiring to be an investigator. She works tirelessly on some missing person cases, sometimes assisted by a new photographer friend, Erik Magnussen. There's also some strange things going on in her office. She finds herself having to keep a secret that has difficult consequences. How far does one go to protect a friend? And when what you thought was your identity is stripped away, who are you really? Those are questions Olive grapples with. Though this book is based on a real tragedy and there are times of grief and danger, there is also romance and hope. Drawn by the Current is an excellent conclusion to The Windy City Sagas. I highly recommend this historical novel by Jocelyn Green. I received a complimentary copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
