We tried a similar style, less expensive, vacuum from a competing brand and it really wasn't the same.  We had to break down and get the Dyson.  It's really in a whole different league.  Build quality, suction power, battery life and user experience are all top notch.

Dyson

This is the best performing vacuum I've ever used.  It is amazing on pet hair.  The optic feature for floors works incredibly well.  It's light, quiet, and easy to use.  Two problems:
 - The carpet tool stops spinning on thick carpets.  You have to stop a restart the vacuum constantly to get it spinning again.
 - The canister capacity is worse than a pregnant woman's bladder.  You have to empty this thing every 90 seconds.  They could have supplied twice the capacity and still maintained a good weight and balance.

Incredible Vacuum Except...

The V15 Detect is powerful with long battery life.  The only issue, I feel,  is the trigger, a design flaw.  Because the machine is relatively heavy compared to my V8 Animal, after 45 minutes of continuous use, I had a blister on my trigger finger.  An on/off switch would be an improvement, in my opinion.

Trigger is a poor solution

this vacuum has absolutely changed my life. battery is great. attachments are mostly great - the carpet attachment has trouble on our rugs sometimes and will get stuck/stop spinning. it's super light & quiet. easy to clean. the different modes are great. i do wish it would stay running without me holding the trigger but that's not a huge deal to me. overall fabulous & worth the money!

i love vacuuming now!

I have a rug free 3100 sq. ft home.  I live with my cousin and 3 dogs. This vacuum is my 3rd Dyson. It's my least favorite...take into consideration the cost and it is NOT worth it.  I used the fluffy head. I have to go over the same areas so many times the battery wears out in one room!!! It's top heavy and the fact that you have to continously push the on button is a REAL drag!!! I hate that it cannot stand up on it's own...real pain!!  I used the power head a couple times and since it does not have a light, i can only imagine what it's NOT picking up.  It has good suction IF you constantly use full power mode but then the battery lasts me 1/2 a room completed.  NO WAY is thus vacuum worth the money!!  TOTAL disappointment!!

Do NOT buy

Disappointed with retractable tool contained in shaft to floor sweeper. It makes the shaft too narrow for pet hair. (clogged on first time use) The V11 interchangeable (from older Dyson) shaft was swapped out for unobstructed air path to canister from floor sweeper to make the V15 usable in all floors of carpeting and hard surface. Not what I thought I would be getting with the new purchase.

Poor choice

Battery on Auto runs out in 16 minutes.  Can't even vacuum whole house.  Roller attachment does not fit into vacuum stick and Dyson has not replaced it yet!  I'm really disappointed!  My old V8 was great and I thought the V15 would be a great improvement!  VERY DISAPPOINTED!  Considering returning the V15!

VERY Disappointed

I'm not enjoying my new vacuum because I had to send it back due to being defective and looking used not brand new. Guess this is how they do when you catch a sale price. Now I'm getting the run around on when I'm getting my replacement. Over a month now and I still don't have my vacuum! This is unacceptable and will never buy another Dyson again.

Believe the bad reviews about dealing with Dyson

The V`15 was far more difficult to assemble than our V-12.  This is mainly due to the poor graphics provided with the "instructions".  Our neighbors have a new V-15, and experienced the same difficulty in attempting to assemble the suction "tubes or wands" to the motor "head".

Assembly problem.

While som aspects are a real improvement on my old V8, a couple of changes are huge handicaps, one so bad I think I'm going to have to buy something else, instead.

The cons: It's too heavy.  It hurts my for arm to vac with it. I can't do the whole of my lounge in one go because of the strain.  I'm a small woman, but no smaller than 25% of American women, and I'm not particularly frail. Ive never had a problem with a vacuum cleaner before, so I I find this an unacceptable design choice on Dyson's part.

The other negative change is that you have to remove the attachments to empty the bin. On previous models I've owned you just picked the vac up over your trash can and pulled the lever, put this one the hatch that opens is where the attachments plug in.  The machine won't let you open the hatch with the attachments plugged in (and it would be difficult to do so and empty over a trash can for the larger attachments anyway.   This is far more cumbersome than the previous Dyson's I've had.

The good - it's more powerful. I believe the battery will last longer, but it's too heavy for me to test that theory as I can't vac with it for long enough. Similarly the bin seems bigger so won't need emptying mid-vac so much but, again, I haven't been able to test that theory.  I find the hair detangler seems to work - which I really like!

Other upgrades like the light that shows you dirt on hard surfaces seem gimmicky to me and I haven't found them useful.
