So what exactly is thatch? Thatch is made from a build up of  leaves, stems and roots, that can block the amount of nutrients your lawn is able to take in. A small layer or thatch is healthy for growing lawns, but once the thatch gets thicker than 0.5 inches, it's time to dethatch.

First of all, you have to understand that this is a gasoline engine powered detaching device. When you are done using it, your lawn is not going to look like your freshly combed hair in the morning. It's going to look like heck for a couple of weeks until it grows back, but it will grow back and be more beautiful and more healthy than ever before. I found this dethatching kit on my Earthquake 33cc tiller to be an absolute beast! I was pleasantly amazed at how well this cheap $100 kit worked. Installation required a couple of small wrenches but still it was really quite easy to do. Do not try to use it without the included guard, it really throws a lot of debris especially if you pull it backwards as some people recommend. I found it to work very well in either direction. So far I've only done my backyard which needed the most work, but I'm very eager to do other areas in my front and side yards so that I can fertilize and reseed to thicken up my lawn. A very well spent $100. Git you one! 

P.S. don't wear shorts while using this as it will fill your boots with dirt like you would not believe, plus it kind of stings. Have fun!

I tried this "dethatcher" for the first yesterday. Fortunately, I had the sense to test it on the side of my home away from the public view. The dethatcher dethathed all right - IT TORE UP MY LAWN! It violently rips up living and dead grass indiscriminately and will leave bare patches where it turns more than a few times in one spot. The entire machine is a wash unless you are cultivation ALREADY cultivated soil. You have to get the RPM's up before placing it on the ground and when you do, you can't allow the entire weight of the machine to rest on the tines (although it has to hit earth to move forward). You have to keep enough pressure on the machine and hold it above the ground to allow it to turn but if you raise it too high, it won't work; after about two tumultuous passes on a 45' strip of grass, it clogged on me - I'm not talking about pulling grass from the tines, grass accumulated between the rotors and locked it closed. The engine isn't strong enough and the dethatcher is inefficient. I am returning both and investing in a machine that is solely devoted to dethatching.

Don't buy it!
