I've had an EcoBee thermostat now for 4+ years, added room and door sensors and all works great. Initially early sensors were crap but new ones (bigger & better range) work much better. We also added door & window sensors. Now Ecobee & Generac merged and we monitor our generator from thermostat.

Ecobee is Getting Better All the Time

Ecobee

We have loved the Ecobee thermostat for about a year. There has always been a simple rule for my wife the kids (ages 19 and 23), when you open the windows, turn off the AC. They get this about one time in a hundred. I don't know why they can't get this simple thing. I was considering hypnosis, or some kind indoctrination camp.
Now, after getting a couple pair of these, none of that will be necessary. The AC turns itself off whenever a window is open. My family is saved ;)

Saved my family

I am quite happy with the detection and sensor on these smartsensors. They work efficiently and send push notifications, however that feature is only available when subscribed to ecobee haven monthly plan. For the price of the unit, it would have been great if this feature was just included without the additional $7. Without the plan, its pretty not very useful unless you open the app to see if the door is closed or open. As a product, it works very well, the sensors are very precise.

Great, but not so great without the subscribtion

Expensive and for full use need the monthly subscription. The motion sensor function isn't accessible form the ecobee app (which also if shamefully inadequate missing granular controls such as wait or reset time). I will never again consider ecobee kit. Their thermostat is equally shameful for ceee cost.

Expensive and inadequate

Subscription required to put your A/C in hold. But wait here's the fun part… your system will still turn on in hold the whole time. So much for savings. My unit was still kicking on, on a day that was nice and I trusted the sensors putting my unit in hold. Thinking it means not to turn on. Thankfully it wasn't much but these sensors are a complete waste. Hold apparently still means your system runs I guess. Make the sensor turn the unit OFF not in hold if it's still going to run! Here is it “saving me money” while my door sensors said open. It waited until I fell asleep to run too! I work nights and will leave my windows and door open on nicer days. I typically turn off the system myself. Apparently I will still have to do that. After this disaster of a first test.

Subscription required to put your A/C in hold

ecobee

Ecobee claims that this sensor detects motion and temperature in addition to door open/close.

That is false, or mine is broken. There is zero motion detection and I have tested multiple times. Only detects door open/close. And I don't see any sort of indication about the temperature at the sensor.

False claim of motion sensing

Without api or external access to the into existing home automation these are basically useless.

That seems to be the major complaint from most people so if you can address this, it will be a hit of a product, until then, hard pass.

Please update me when you add api access.

Works well but without external access it's a fail

I have had this SmartSensor setup for a few months now. I installed it on a door about 20 feet away from the thermostat. I am not a fan with the sensors inability to stay connected. I had to retry the setup steps multiple times before it finally connected successfully to my Ecobee thermostat. From then on, it would randomly disconnect from the thermostat. Each time I had to remove the battery from the sensor to attempt to restart/reconnect it. It does not seem to attempt to reconnect on its own, and because this is a measure of security, I find this troubling.

When it works I like it, but it is unreliable.

Randomly Disconnects from Ecobee Thermostat

Bought 4 sensors, one was defective and could not connect after struggling for over 3 hours. Tried all possible solutions nothing worried.
Help line numbers are just to deceive and no one attends even you holed for hours, Chat service is bad as well as no service personnel there to take you online. Hard to struggle with email. The responses are mostly automated service. God bless you if you need to get them in touch. Hopeless service, God bless you with lOTS of luck so that you are attended.
keep trying and have patience….
If not bought consider dropping the idea or look for alternatives.

Sensor is good if it works

I'm really disappointed in this product. The ecobee thermostat and temperature sensors integrate with both Google Home and SmartThings. These integrate with nothing. They are essentially useless unless you buy their monitoring service. You're better off buying a cheap door sensor from monoprice.

Doesn't integrate with Google or SmartThings
