Very convenient

This is great if you need a spotlight for a close and hard to see task. Especially Cross-stitch!

Best and brightest

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought one of these 8 years ago and have been happy with it's performance.  I wanted to replace it with a new one though because elastic in the headband is worn out, and one of the rubber boots covering a switch has a hole in it.  At the time of ordering, Walmart had the lowest price.

I want a headlamp with a red light setting to maintain night vision, and it's important that it be easy to operate--in particular, that there's no danger of accidentally turning on the bright white light when I want the red light. 

I really liked an older model, which seems to be discontinued, in which one button simply turned the red LEDs on and off, and the other cycled the white light through bright, dim, and wide-angle settings. 

This one works differently. It's fine for what I wanted, but the button functions are unnatural and tricky, and the "focus" feature isn't really what you might think.

The right button cycles the light through three settings: red, bright white, dim white. Fortunately,  when it is on red, if you wait a few seconds, the next press just turns it off--it doesn't cycle to the white settings and blind you. It's not bad, but not as simple as one button for red and one button that goes to bright white on the first press.

I wouldn't call this "digital focussing." The center LED has a reflector and a fairly tight focus.  Two flanking side LEDs have diffusers and produce a fairly wide spread. The left button lets "focus" by relative brightness. You can have a bright tight beam and dim flanking beams or bright flanking beams and a dim center beam. It remembers the setting. This is all sorta weird. The widest setting isn't very wide or very evenly lit--you've seen any "COB" headlamps they are much better for general area illumination or reading a book in a tent.

OK for my needs, but I preferred an older model

This is my second one. First one is over a decade old and still works. I would give 5 stars, but I am sure there are better ones that cost more.
I have used this headlamp while camping and hiking, working on car, and when power goes out.

Great for price

I purchased this to replace one I used on pretty much daily basis, crocheing at night mostly. That one I had for at least 25 years, all I ever had to do is change batteries and it just kept on ticking! Now this one has a push button (not a slide) it is not easy to use. they say it has 5 different light's, My husband and I have only found 3. The night vision is wierd there's like several dots you see when thats on. One light is very narrow forward, so I really can't recomend this headlamp.

It's a great little headlamp and I love the features and the high brightness, and all the different modes, but it eats batteries way too fast even when you switch it to low output.

I feel conflicted about recommending this light. On one hand it is very bright for it's size, with well focused beams.  On the other hand, the on off switch is awkward to use, if you have bigger than average hands. Unlike my older unit, this one has recessed light switches not raised making it more difficult to turn it off and on then it should be. For that I give this a 3.75 out of five.

Almost perfect.

Confusing modes - can not tell between White High, Spot High and even Flood High. Also the Red mode is virtually useless. Light is quite bright (at its highest intensity) but shows on the package it can reach 85 meters - or about 280 ft - not true(unless there is an adult elephant at that distance and even then you risk not seeing). The iPX4 standard shown on the package refers to "resistance of water splashing from any direction" but it is a false advertisement that it is water resistant (package even shows a picture of rain). If you use it in the rain for a while it will NOT make it!
The hinge (joining the adjustable bracket to the main body) feels flimsy/fragile and can easily break trying to adjust its angle. Replacement warranty (with package available and receipt) is ONE year (not 3 years as advertised). The 3-yr refers to partial compensation - for example, if in the 2nd year after purchase you have a valid warranty issue, it is to the company's discretion to partially help you toward the purchase of another unit. 
Customer Service is overseas..... most of the time you will get an automated message ("this number is not in service"). If you get past that, there is a 10 min non-sense advertisement about energizer products, and another 15 mins (in my case) wait to talk to someone. If your question is anything other than what the short (inadequate) manual/instructions contain, you are out of luck. Would one spend one hour on the phone for a warranty issue and not knowing what to expect? I wouldn't. 
All in all, this is a bright headlight made by an untrustworthy company - if it goes bad you are on your own!
