I used this to make a DiY mailbox alarm because we kept getting our mail stolen by POS oxygen thieves. It works great for this purpose.

It works exactly as I hoped, fairly rugged construction.   Easy to install.

Great switch for my project

I was delighted when I saw Walmart had a mercury switch and at such a good price, but I was disappointed to find it was, as another reviewer stated, a ball switch not a mercury switch.  Ball switches, since they involve a hard metal to hard metal contact, are less reliable that the true mercury switch which encases the hard metal contacts with a liquid metal for the best contact possible.  I've used this ball switch, and so far, it is working better than the AC switch I'd used before, but like the AC switch, it too will cease working over time and the switch will have to be rethrown to get back the electrical circuit.  On the plus side, the plastic outer casing and the mounting flange are ideal for my project eliminating the need to fashion something else to make it work.

The Great Switcheroo: ball for mercury switch.

The item I received is NOT a mercury switch, it is a ball switch. Inside the little metal can, inside the capsule, is a metal ball that makes the electrical contact. I'm pretty angry with the fraudulent description, so I'll hold off on any more comments at this time, except to say that the two types are similar, but the mercury switch is better.

Switch received was not as advertised. It was not a mercury switch but instead was a ball contact switch. It's functional but light on circuit flickers, this wouldn't happen with mercury.
