Far Side of the Sea is another hit for Kate Breslin.  Picking up where Not By Sight left off, in this story we learn about Colin, a WWI veteran who lost part of his arm in the war and suffers emotionally from his experience.  The female lead in this story, Johanna, was quite loveable.  She is desperately searching for her father and sister and enlists Colin's help.  The two go on quite the adventure together!

I really loved their story.  The historic detail is right on point, not too much, not too little.  I enjoyed learning how they used carrier pigeons in WWI.  There is intrigue that kept me guessing until the very end.  And the romance was very well written.  I love rooting for a couple with great chemistry!

I highly recommend you take the team to read this fantastic story!  And although it can be read alone, I also recommend you read Not By Sight...because why not!?  It's just as good!

Fantastic WWI Romance

This book has mystery, romance, history and spies. I found it an entertaining fast read. It had many twists and turns in it. I liked reading about how Intelligent Agencies used carrier pigeons in WWI. It was interesting how you couldn't always tell whose side someone was on. Reading this book and other historical fiction books has helped me to enjoy history. I find myself researching the different things mentioned in the book. 

Far Side of the Sea is the first book I've read of Kate Breslin's. It will not be the last one I read of hers. Although it is the second book it can be read as a stand-alone.

Mystery in WWI

Far Side of the Sea is another winner by Kate Breslin. I have no doubt it will be among my top favorites I have read in 2019. I love how she vividly describes the setting and era. I felt like I was transported back to World War I. I loved Colin and Johanna. I enjoyed watching them grow throughout the story. 
Far Side of the Sea gets a well deserved five plus stars from me. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy clean historical fiction.

FAR SIDE OF THE SEA is an enthralling tale of espionage, love, and faith set in World War I. Lt. Colin Mabry of the British Army suffered injuries resulting in the amputation of his left hand. Colin deals with reoccurring nightmares, anger, shame, and some insecurity because of his disability. He now serves his country decoding messages for M18, including those delivered by carrier pigeon. He receives a message he believes is from Jewel Reyer, the young French woman who nursed him back to health from a leg injury in German occupied France a year earlier. Upon his arrival in Paris, he meets her sister, Joanna, who enlists his help finding Jewel and their father. This begins their adventure across France and to Spain, becoming embroiled in a spy plot. Just when I thought I had the spies straight (good guys vs. bad guys), there would be a twist to confuse things again. This is a book that is difficult to read and carry on with regular life, since it gets very hard to put down.  I love to learn more about history from fiction and I know Kate Breslin is an author who works hard to include correct details. I highly recommend FAR SIDE OF THE SEA.

What an adventure!  Kate Breslin's writing, as always, is flawless but this story steps it up a notch by adding quite a bit of mystery and intrigue as spies infiltrate Europe during WWI. The plot is intricately crafted to make this story a page-turner and the real history behind the story is quite interesting. Kate Breslin combines these elements with unforgettable characters, beautiful dialogue, and lessons in faith and courage to bring forth another stunning, must-read historical fiction. 

There is a book that comes before this one called Not By Sight but I did not read it before reading this book. Far Side of the Sea can be read as a stand-alone and I don't think I missed anything though Grace (Colin's twin) and her fiancé from the first book do play minor roles in this story. 

Colin is a swoon-worthy hero who is loyal, faithful, kind and tender-hearted though he's emotionally and physically wounded and scarred from serving in the front line during the war. He's definitely flawed, with his easily stoked temper and constant sense of insecurity, but his courage and bravery to do the right thing win the day. Johanna is a young woman with a troubled and tragic past who is only looking for love and acceptance from a father and sister she never knew. Though somewhat unconventional for her time, Jo is straight-forward, fun, loving and fiercely loyal to those whom she loves. Their romance, courage, and faith blossom as they work together in the midst of treachery and deception and espionage to find Jo's long-lost father. 

For historical fiction and historical romance aficionados, this book is one of the top reads of 2019!

A stunning historical fiction from Kate Breslin

Having read—and LOVED—Kate Breslin's previous novels, I can honestly say I couldn't wait for the release of Far Side of the Sea. So much so, the poor postal service lady was no doubt tired of me stalking my mailbox in hopes of this coveted bookish mail. And just like its predecessors, I devoured this story from start to finish.

About the Book:

In spring 1918, Lieutenant Colin Mabry, a British soldier working with MI8 after suffering injuries on the front, receives a message by carrier pigeon. It is from Jewel Reyer, the woman he once loved and who saved his life–a woman he believed to be dead. Traveling to France to answer her urgent summons, he desperately hopes this mission will ease his guilt and restore the courage he lost on the battlefield. 

Colin is stunned, however, to discover the message came from Jewel's half sister, Johanna. Johanna, who works at a dovecote for French Army Intelligence, found Jewel's diary and believes her sister is alive in the custody of a German agent. With spies everywhere, Colin is skeptical of Johanna, but as they travel across France and Spain, a tentative trust begins to grow between them.

When their pursuit leads them straight into the midst of a treacherous plot, danger and deception turn their search for answers into a battle for their lives.

My thoughts:

War had left a brutal mark on Colin, not only physically but emotionally. Possessing a loyal heart but nursing a wounded soul, Colin became a hero worth championing for. The author did an excellent job of pairing this world-weary soldier with determined and thirsty-for-answers heroine, Johanna.  And can I just say the incorporation of carrier pigeons in this story is an interesting touch?! I love learning new things while reading a story so fabulously entertaining.

My mystery-lovin' self enjoys guessing story plots, and usually I'm a fairly decent predictor. Nope, not with this one. Kate Breslin has outdone herself with this twisty-turvy book. I kinda want to dub her the Plot Twist Queen because this story kept me scratching my head until the very end! Amongst the mystery, the danger, and the complex backdrop of WWI, Colin and Johanna have to learn to trust—both each other and an unfailing God. 

I love how the author emphasizes God's ever-present help in times of trouble and His overwhelming love that finds us even in the darkest moments. 

This story engages the mind and bolsters the heart. I thoroughly enjoyed its gripping mystery and hope-giving message.

His posting Hastings allows him the decode messages that are important to the Allies war efforts and feel as if he can be of some use still in the war effort. Johanna Reyer is in France - hiding from her past and searching for her family, including a sister she knew nothing about. A sister whom she believes to be in danger. And if she hopes to find Jewel she needs Colin's assistance in identifying her. And if she can find Jewel she hopes that she will find her father, a man she hasn't seen since she was 3 years old, a man whose parting words were that he wanted nothing more than to be her papa. When Colin meets Johanna he is less than pleased with her subterfuge in obtaining his assistance but to honor the promise he made to Jewel he agrees to aid her. With a single photograph and a name as their only clues, Colin and Johanna must watch their every word and action so as to not arouse suspicions.

Far Side of the Sea is an excellent read and those who enjoy WWI historical fiction will enjoy this newest book from Kate Breslin. I like that several of the characters had previously been in her books so one has a familiarity with them. But if this is your first meeting with the author this book can very much be read on its own and nothing will be lacking in your understanding or enjoyment while reading. I like Johanna and her most unique personality and how she grew throughout in matters of faith. I also like how both Johanna and Colin fight to do what they feel is what they are meant to do even if it was opposed by those who had authority over them.

Touching and Moving WWI Fiction

This book keeps the reader questioning who can be trusted and who can't. Historical fiction mixed with suspense is a very enjoyable genre. I also enjoyed the fact that previous characters from Not by Sight are found in this read. What a treat for this reader!

I really enjoyed the characters in this book...including the secondary characters that really add to to the story. The historical information included in the book is fascinating as well. Don't miss out reading the authors note at the end.

Trust is at the root of this story...who can you trust?

A suspense story with terrific characters that keeps the reader guessing until the end. Go get a copy...and if you haven't read Not by Sight, do yourself a favor and read that as well!
