Just replaced the one I'd had for 10 years. It was still working but had gotten rusty so I got my new one. These are great little devices for keeping tanks from freezing in winter.

I live in Idaho and it never gets above 35 degrees for several months out of the year, and it's below zero for dozens of nights every winter.  I've had this same deicer in my 70gallon water trough for the past 7 years.  2 years ago it lost its flotation and now it hovers just a few inches above the bottom of the tank.  But it still works like a charm.  The only time ice forms in the tank is when it get in the minus double digits for a couple days in a row.

Great deicer

I do not live somewhere terribly cold but we often have nights in the high 20s. That said, this deicer is wonderful. I am AMAZED how much more water the horses drink when the water is kept warmer. With this deicer, I fill the tank twice a week. Without it, I was filling the tank 3 times every two weeks. It gets warm but not so hot that it burns on contact. It turns on at 40 degrees so it doesn't run all the time. We frequently have winter days in the 60s. I like the power savings. I can't say how it would work somewhere much colder, but it is perfect for my situation. This one replaced an identical one that still worked but was cracked by a pony that pulled it from the tank and played with it all afternoon. For the price, I decided to replace the cracked one. (very ornery pony!!!) None of the other horses or ponies have ever messed with the deicer. The one I replaced was 8 years old.

Exceptional product

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This product worked incredibly well defrosting ice that had built up in the cold months we had! It helps me add so much time to my daily routines, very durable. Didn't use much power at all, not a lot of energy.

Works- not all that cold here in TN yet only thaws small area in small horse tank

Bought this so my horses would be able to drink their water outside this winter. Does a very good job of keeping the water from freezing. The old one I had sank to the bottom of the trough but this one floats. My horses are completely terrified of it. Took hours of coaxing to get them to get anywhere near it. At first I thought, from they way they reacted after touching the water, that something was wrong and it was zapping them! I stuck my hand in the water and it's fine, they're just being babies. I had to stand on the end of the trough and literally drink out of it myself before they'd even consider putting their faces back in it. I'm pretty impressed considering it was only $40 and keeps 100+ gallons of water unfrozen when it's under 20 degrees outside for several hours. Wish it was just a little less menacing.

Works very well. Horses are terrified

I have been using this de-icer for a month and even when the air temp was between 15-25F, this did not keep the ice off enough for the horses to drink. I am very dissatisfied.

We have two in outside troughs. Both completely froze in ice when the temps dropped to freezing.
