Safety Tips for Lithium-Ion Batteries

The chain connecting the front crank under the Captain's seat to the rear crank of the Stoker should be on the left side of the bike.  On the right side of the Stoker's crank should be the chain that connects to the rear wheel - like on any other bike.  On this bike both chains are on the right side.  They just used off the shelf parts to create a tandem.  The result is that the two chains rub together.  When in the highest gear (smallest outside gear on the rear wheel) the chains angle over the top of one another and want to come off the chain wheel.  You can not ride in high gear.  This is critical since it is an e-bike you spend a lot of time in this gear going faster than you would normally pedal.

In the attached picture I placed a line parallel to the plane of the chain wheel.  Once the chain leaves the chain wheel you can see it diverge to the left where it hits the other chain on the chain wheel.

The rest of the bike is OK.  But $3,000 is a lot to spend on an "OK" bike that is not 100% functional.
