Fluke, or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings

Just why do humpback whales sing? That's the question that has marine behavioral biologist Nate Quinn and his crew poking, charting, recording, and photographing very big, wet, gray marine mammals. I've read some other books by Christopher Moore, and he is always hilarious--I was a fan about a third of the way into his first book. I was lucky I didn't discover him when he first started writing novels, because I'm enjoying the supreme indulgence of being able to devour book after delicious book without having to wait.

In his earlier work, he was funny and intelligent, but his irreverence was a little more coarse. In Fluke, it all comes together. It's hilarious, smoothly irreverent, has a completely bizarre plot that you can nevertheless picture clearly, and is polished with more research than his previous novels. (Even his disclaimer and acknowledgements will give you a few chuckles.)

I won't give anything away, but I loved the ending. Actually, I loved the whole book, as I think nearly anyone would, so long as they aren't the type to throw it down in outrage upon reading bizarrely comical scenes like the whaley boys waving their members in unison. There are some weirdities like that in the book, but Christopher Moore's style keeps you snickering and gasping and LOLing at absurdities throughout.

His characters really grow on you, and along with a new view of whales and those who study them, (and a whole lot of bizarre images of Goo) you come away with a good feeling. And if you're like me, you'll want to share it!

Fluke is a completely satisfying and hilarious story.
