<p>Inhaltlich unveränderte Neuauflage. In den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten ist eine schier unüberschaubare Zahl von wissenschaftlichen und politischen Kontroversen über ehrenamtliches Engagement veröffentlicht worden. Der kleinste gemeinsame Nenner dieser Arbeiten mit den unterschiedlichsten Motiven ist die Erkenntnis, dass freiwilliges Engagement nicht nur eine große Bedeutung für den Arbeitsmarkt, sondern auch immensen Einfluss auf das soziale Zusammenleben und den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt hat. Als theoretische Grundlage für die Beeinflussung von Form und Umfang des gesamten freiwilligen Engagements sind besonders Ansätze der erklärenden Soziologie geeignet, da diese es ermöglichen, Vorhersagen über die Auftretenswahrscheinlichkeit von freiwilligem Engagement zu treffen. Inwiefern die Rational-Choice-Theorie als prominenter Vertreter der erklärenden Soziologie es vermag Restriktionen zu benennen, die freiwilliges Engagement wahrscheinlicher machen, wird in dieser Arbeit empirisch überprüft. Datengrundlage der bi- und multivariaten statistischen Analysen stellt der »Freiwilligensurvey 1999« mit knapp 15.000 Befragten dar.</p><br/><p>Dipl.-Soziologe, Studium der Soziologie, Sozialpsychologie und Statistik an der LMU München.
