Since we have living space - including bedrooms - in the basement, I had to finally cave in and spend money on a dehumidifier. I checked out several review sites, and the Frigidaire series came out high on several of them. More checking to see capacity in terms of the area that we were working with, and I knew I could not go lower than a 70-pint size one.
Walmart got it shipped to the store in fewer days than expected, and I brought it home to set it up immediately. It was three days before I could take it off continuous run. It's almost two weeks later, and now - as long as I empty the water three or four times between morning and bed time - we can keep the humidity in the ~900 sq ft basement down to 45-55%.
A larger unit probably would have been a better buy for the intensity of the humidity and the size of the basement, but this one was the best we could do with our budget. I can't complain. The smell is gone, the air feels much more comfortable, and I think we've got a good deal.

This dehumidifier really gets the job done. We have a really damp partially finished below  ground basement. It has mustly smell constantly. When we got the dehumidifier we left it running for a week. In less than a day we could already feel the difference!! The smell was gone and the air was dry! We love it.  We emptied the bucket up to 3 times a day the first few days and now we are down to once a day on continuous run. Noise level is moderate hum that is not a bother at all and it was just a plug in and start.  I highly recommend this unit.

Highly recommend

We have major mold in our basement and humidity and I purchased the dehumidifier that could hold the most (for the cost I could afford). It is not noisy (you can hear it running but sounds like a humidifier in the background) and I have to dump the water three times a day. The water basket part just slides out (when you squeeze the sides) and easily snaps back in. I've had no problem carrying the heavy water to the back door, as the handle is quite sturdy. I've had this for almost two weeks, so can't say it if will last but so far so good. Do compare price as prices go up and down on sales on all dehumidifiers. The directions were easy to read and set up. I have it on the cycle it's set at for the beginning---continuous---given our major humidity problem, but it's working and I can tell the humidity is slowly going down. Come winter, I suspect I'll be emptying it once a day. I can't say how much our electric bill will go up yet, but when I get the bill I'll try to update my review.

Does its job well so needs to be emptied daily. Also, the area smells fresher and the doors to the rooms no longer stick!
Nice handle to carry reservoir for emptying but a little tricky to pour accurately when full because of all the cover parts attached to the top.
Noise of fan is not objectionable.
Bought the extended warranty (2 extra years) as the lifespan of dehumidifiers seems to be limited based on reviews of ALL brands on line and this unit will be used 24/7. This replaces a 30 year old Kenmore unit that finally quit after being used on the east coast and on the west coast.
Walmart delivered this item in record time ( I think 5 days) for a shipping cost that was less than the cost of the gasoline to drive to the store. I was impressed since it weighs about 50 pounds with all of its boxes. Requires two people to remove from box as it has to be lifted vertically. The alternate for one person is being very cautious with a case cutter to slice the box corners without cutting too deep.

Does the job

I live in the North East where summers are hot and humid, and dreaded the way my cellar gets during that season; funky, damp, the pipes drip, & everything feels clammy. I knew there were things called "dehumidifiers", but I'd only seen one ages ago. It was a bulky, rusty metal contraption, and no way something I'd want.

So, why did I finally buy a dehumidifier? Well, I'd had an antique dresser stored in the cellar under thick blankets for the past 8 years, recently wanted to use it & found that the veneer had warped from all those summers in the damp cellar. Bummer!
I chose this Frigidaire.
Want to know how complicated it is?
This is the set up: Plug it in & press "on". (I use the continuous setting.) It turns off when it's full, which is often! Emptying it is easy as pie. I'd rather not hook it up to a hose, so just use as-is.
It works GREAT, & my cellar is DRY, & doesn't smell funky!
Wish I'd bought one years ago, and that dresser would be AOK.

Great dehumidifier for dummies!

This is an excellent product, bar none. Does everything it says it will do. Has two blower speeds, cuts off when water bin is full, has casters to roll easily, timer to start and stop unit, cuts off when set point is reached and is really quiet. We are totally satisfied with unit.

Excellent product for a first time buyer

I've only had this in operation for two days. It is quiet and it is removing water vapor far better than my previous unit. However...I do question whether it is operating properly. I'll hope to contact a tech person familiar with the proper sequence of operation. I have the digital control set for 50% RH. The compressor and fan shut down at the 50% RH but within 45 seconds the display changes to 55% and the fan alone restarts for about 1 second (at this 1 second fan on period the display flashes back to 50% RH). This sequence repeats from 4 to 8 times and finally both the fan and compressor start and continue to run. During the 4 to 8 short fan cycles I do not know if the compressor is also attempting to start (possibly against too much head pressure, then overloading)...or...Perhaps it is only the fan cycling on/off rapidly and the compressor is held off by a rapid cycle protection circuit. I do not know at this point but I question whether this is proper operation. Time will tell, I need to get an answer.

This FAD704DWD Frigidaire Dehumidifier was highly reviewed by Consumer Reports. The Walmart service was excellent. I purchased the unit online at walmart.com and had it shipped to the store. That all went smoothly. It hooked up fine and definitely removed moisture from the air. I used the garden hose hookup to external drain and this worked fine. The only problems were: (1) the humidity sensor in the unit is only accurate to within 15% of actual humidity (as determined by comparing with two other digital sensors); (2) this particular unit made an irritating sound like an old fashioned police whistle when the compressor was running. Problem (2) was a deal breaker for us as the unit was to be used near a bedroom. So the unit was returned. The return process went very smoothly and I'll be checking to make sure the credit went to my credit card. I was impressed with Walmart's service and handling of this whole process and I'll be purchasing this same unit again from Walmart before next summer to give another specific unit of this model a try (because I've seen numerous customer reviews of this model that praise how quiet it is). That praise makes me believe I just unluckily got a problem unit.

Works but too noisy

This is a replacement so I can't say yet. The Frigidaire is probably the best out there but that isn't saying much. I have owned at least 5 units. They all die in 2-3 years, usually the sealed system so the 5 year warranty covers it, but it is really frustrating to go through this every couple years and Frigidaire/ Electrolux customer service is horrible. To be safe, buy the extended warranty for this baby.

Have used this product for 3 days. It seems to be working very well. Directions and customer service are the cause of the poor rating. Poor directions with poor visuals. Customer service 800 number in booklet refers you to a 706 area code. That number tells you that it does not accept in coming calls. On website a second 800 number gives the same 706 number for service. The web search took 70 minutes to get to a human for help. She was very helpful. The problem was that the directions are incomplete to get the hose to drain rather than use the bucket which has to be emptied 2-3 times / day. One must have a kit which is being sent to plug a hole to divert the water to the hose. It is beyond reason as to why the dehumidifier did not come with this standard part and directions could not be more complete and descriptive.
