Love this bike computer. It was easy to set up, it is easy to read, and since we have a lot of sunshine where we live, I seldom need to charge it. I was recently on a 5-day backcountry mountain bike trip, and the computer stayed well-charged without me having to plug it in. Highly recommend this computer.

I upgraded from the Edge 800. Lots of changes. Bigger screen with color. The navigational map is awesome. The ability to set up the screens the way you want is great. The one thing that did surprise me was that the sensors are not tied to a bike profile. The only one I share is the HR.

Great trail and gravel maps

I've had it for about a month and so far love it. I bought it for the bigger display and the solar since I live in AZ and we have LOTS of sun. 
I can read the display without having to squint and bend down closer to the screen and haven't had to charge it yet.

Very happy

I am very happy with my Garmin 1040 Solar.  Ever since I started cycling I have only used Garmin bike computers.  I have used most of the 1040S features: preloaded maps, cycling event routes, turn by turn instructions, radar integration and training plans.  I am happy with the results. Being able to use solar to charge increased the range of my cycling routes.  The only drawback- when paired with the Varia (depending on the Varia settings), the Varia runs out of battery power before the Edge runs out.  I have also not used the bike alarm feature of the Edge.  Overall a great bike computer with many bells and whistles.  I don't think one cyclist would be able to use all the features, but one can use most of the features.

Garmin Edge 1040 Solar Extends Your Range

Mostly good points, but several not good.
Not good:
- screen.  Hard to easily discern in strong sunlight.  Needs a screen like my Garmin 970.
- sluggish startup.  Probably due to the old processor and the xx4 programming language.
- solar.  The panels need to charge the battery, like my ancient Cateye Solar, not just extend use. 
- menus.  Somewhat cumbersome.  I understand this is an “older” computer, but the menus need to be reworked.

Good:
- battery life.  Used it on a 1200k ride and virtually lasted the entire trip.  If solar CHARGED the battery, it would be a game changer.
- size. Easy to see.


Looking forward to the Garmin 1060 in hope the negatives are resolved.

Good & Bad - a lot of good

I purchased this computer a few months ago.  The solar recharge is excellent, the display is super, the only thing that I have a problem with is connecting with other computers for information sharing.  It is real difficult to have another program that you use to get the information from this Garmin.

Good Computer

I like the usability, and the solar feature is nice as well for extending battery life.  The screen is very legible in normal light , but hard to read in strong sunlight.

nice unit!

I have been using the solar edge in Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. Ive found that even when off, Im unable to gain much charge on the device through the solar. It's not worth the investment from that standpoint.

In addition when I am climbing tough mountain bike terrain, the garmin “pauses” tracking and I have to take my hand off the handlebar to press the play button twice to get it to resume. Sometimes I must do this 5 times in a row to get it to quit.

Lastly, I use this device for navigation, but when I am approaching a climb (and unfortunately usually a fork in the trail) the screen switches to show me Im about to climb. I dont find that as helpful as navigation and it usually means I need to stop at the bottom of a climb loaing all momentum to manually switch back to the navigation screen.

This device could be right for some folks, but Im not a big fan for the 1k price tag.

Solar isn't highly effective, hard to navigate

it's a good computer when everything is working properly.  however, the garmin menus are really confusing and not very intuitive.   also, the computer will sporadically stop synching with my phone/strava.  there doesn't ever to be any consistent reason but i often have to turn it off and on and re synch with my phone.   very frustrating.   this is the last garmin i buy for sure

My Wahoo Element died 5 days before a 40 day bikepacking trip. I find it hard to express just what a waste of money this computer is: won't load routes consistently from Ride w GPS, is not intuitive AT ALL, won't rename routes, acter every ride tells me how much solar power helped… Seriously. The Climb feature is ridiculous. Standard setting was calling out pimples. Had to go into settings and change. God help me, this is probably the biggest waste of money in my life.Okay, maybe seccond biggest. And for what it's worth, I run withwma Forerunner 55 and recommend to everyone looking for a running watch

There's a Golf app on it: that's how stupid.
